I'm working on an application where I want to take a snapshot of the
results of [fft~] every once in a while and send them out using OSC.
The part I'm having trouble with is getting the output from [fft~]. In
the help file for [fft~] they use [print~] to print out the vector
coming from the [fft~] object.
I think I know how to manipulate the list once I have it, so that part
isn't a problem. I just want something that I can [bang( every once in
a while to get the vector. Any ideas, or places I should be looking?

sure ;)
also guys, .. there is the wiki page on puredata.info,
may be add something to it.
i have said there that i got a 14channel A&H mixer +some cables.
i think i can sort out some other audio equipment (gat some speakers and mics
of a my mates).. it's easy if we do it at my place but otherwise i'll need to
get transport (to bring speakers, but the mixer fits in my bag).
If we can get some money, then i can get a bigger PA with subs
(so we could actually here how our stuff sounds on them big subs!)
i personaly 'd love to do that actually!
i worked at pa compony wherehouse, but there people would bother if
someone make noise ..
;) but the loudness could be an issue here (well our squat could be
fine, but i cannot say for sure right now) .. and may be we should
stick to a basic mackie speaker option then.
what else do we need?
screens and projectors?
i've got some CRT monitors and a few LCD ones ..
good network swithces are also avaliable.
with some cat5 cables

I'm not sure it's a bug or I'm missing something. I am having problems
with oscx objects (Pd version 0.40.3-extended-20080721):
I can create [sendOSC] but not [dumpOSC] If I open the helpfile for
dumpOSC it usually (but not always!) displays fine but if I try copy/paste
to another patch it doesn't work. I tried adding [import]] & [declare] to
no avail (closing and opening the file as well as restarting pd in
between).
I also tried adding oscx to the path but that doesn't stick. I managed to
add other directories to the load path and next time I start pd they are
there. not when I tried oscx. And the dll files are there in the correct
place. Is there some mysterious incantation?
thanks
Oded
Hey all,
Before I make one, is there an abs/ext out there that prints the
difference between subsequent floats?
1,2,3,4,5 -> 1,1,1,1
2,4,6,8 -> 2,2,2
5,9,30,5,7 -> 4,21,-25,2
Thanks,

Hi,
attached is a preview of a little effect I was working on after
meeting with a nice Ableton Live user (Hi, Cee!). It aims to be a
clone of the Beatrepeat effect in newer Live versions, which basically
is a delay line with variable, tempo synced taps. My version is pure
Pd.
This is a very early prototype but already fun to play with.
So have fun.

Hi,
from the ongoing discussion about Max/MSP compatibility I wonder if
it would be a good idea to create a list of available objects in the
extended version, quite as it exists for vanilla. For someone who is
getting acquainted - like me - it sure would be a useful thing, I
mean like '5.referemce/help-intro.pd'. Does anybody work on such a
thing?

"mach-o, but wrong architecture" means that you are most likely on an

We are reviving the New York City Patching Circle!
http://puredata.info/community/NYCPatchingCircle
We spend enough time alone staring at our computers; we are proposing
to work together. So often issues that arise when working can be
solved with a quick two minute discussion that would take hours to
solve alone. We have Dorkbot to see people's work, we have Share
where anyone can play, we have workshops and universities to learn
from. This is a meeting where we all can come to work.
This is an informal gathering of patching and patchers (Pd, Max/MSP/
Jitter, and even vvvv, EyesWeb, etc.). Beginners and Experienced
welcome. Open to everyone, students, the public, etc. Work on school
projects, personal projects, ask for help, help others, or just patch
quietly to yourself, in a room full of other people patching patches
and helping other people patch.
Time: Saturday, November 22nd, noon-6pm
Place: This meeting will take place in the Eyebeam Education Lab:

Hallo,
hm, I'm a bit confused how to place elementary filters: In the book,
Miller writes that the r/czero should be placed before the poles and
the screenshots also show this:
http://crca.ucsd.edu/~msp/techniques/latest/book-html/node160.html
However the example patches (H11 ff.) and the butterworth abstractions
that come with Pd have it the other way around and follow the
alphabetic order with *z*ero last!

But be careful with table resizing: It is likely that you get glitches
in your audio output if you do extensive resizing. But resizing
shouldn't be necessary that much anyway - just make your tables large
enough and adapt to it with your playback locations.

hi there,
i use the 'freeverb~' object for reveberation in a small soundfile
player patch.
it seems that freeverb~ causes a dsp overflow at some point. i cant
figure out when or
why the dsp starts filling up to 170%. its allways different...
anybody had this problem, too? could it be using the 'freeze' message?
thx! cmf
Hello again.
I've examined my problem and reach the conclusion that
the glitches in the sound happens almost everytime I change
the video being played by one of the [pix_film] I'm
using. When I do this there's a peak in the disk
activity, on data read/sec and data written/sec.
Is there a way to fix this? How could I make sound output
independent of GEM? should I have 1 [pix_film] for each
clip?
Thank you for any help.
Daniel Almeida
Hello,
I'm trying the help-patch for pix_freeframe. pix_freeframe gets created
and puts out some information about the loaded plugin, but everytime I
give it some data to its argument inlets I get: error: pix_freeframe: no
instance of plugin available.
I'm using [pix_video] as video source with ieee1394 camera (PAL) instead
of [pix_film] and tried several freeframe plugins I could find, the
original plugin 'WaveVFX' in the help patch wasn't available.
When pix_video is directly connected to a pix_texture I can see that
pix_video is working properly.
if found some older posts about that error message but didn't get the
point...
perhaps someone knows better...
thanks,
Martin
Hello list,
I have a problem to execute a script shell (myscript.sh) from Pd
using [shell] object.
My patch is :
[/Users/jackuser/Desktop/Mickael/shTOphpTOpd/myscript.sh]
|
[ggee/shell]
|
[print]
But i need to have root privileges to execute this script
(myscript.sh). So i enter a line in /etc/sudoers :
jackuser ALL=(ALL) PASSWD: ALL, !/Users/jackuser/Desktop/Mickael/
shTOphpTOpd/, NOPASSWD: /Users/jackuser/Desktop/Mickael/shTOphpTOpd/
to execute myscript.sh as jackuser.
Now from terminal when i execute :
jackuser$ sh myscript.sh
all works fine !
But not with my Pd patch.
I am on MacOSX.4.11, PowerBook G4, Pd version 0.40.3-extended
Any idea ? Privileges problems ?

hey there everyone,
so i finally got around to installing Ubuntu on my macbook, and, ah - wow.
i've tried to install linux every year for perhaps six years now, starting
with RedHat version 6, and each time have given up. but this time i think
i'm going to stick with it. hooray.
so. the first thing i've noticed is that the sound is crazy quiet compared
to OSX (or rather, OSX is crazy loud compared to everything else). even
playing with all the volume sliders i could find, i could make it only half
as loud as under OSX.
i strongly suspect though that this is because the OSX audio output driver
is actually heavily compressing the audio before sending it to the
speakers, so it just _seems_ louder. i'm a Linux newbie but i've been using
OSX in a BSD-y way (eg spending most of my time in Terminal). is it
possible to insert a compressor module into the PulseAudio or OSS or ALSA
DSP chain somewhere? ideally one that only kicked in when the internal
speaker output was being used, and not when the line-out was being used.

I've made a patch to Vj, with a wav file being played, two image layers and a few pix effects life 3 motion blurs, 1 operation (this can be changed, add, subtraction or multiplication. only one operation work at a given time), pix_colorize, pix_posterize and pix_contrast. the effects can be turned on/off.
Ocasionally there are some glitches in the sound. I'm using a Tascam US-122L or the computer sound card. I've tried to change sound delay with no effect.
each time there is a glitch, there's a peak in the disk activity.
Also, I'm doing some calculations to automaticaly get the frame interval to sync each loop to the beat. this beat is constant.
any idea? how can I optimize my patch?
Thanks for any help

hi all, hi IOhannes
after having installed pd 0.42.0test5, i assumed to have discovered a
behaviour change of [unpack] and [pack], until i noticed:
a) zexy comes with its own version of [pack] and [unpack].
why are they called the same? i really don't get that.
b) in pd 0.42.0test5 they seem to override the built-in classes.
is this a bug? if yes, pd's or zexy's?
c) the zexy versions can explicitly be called by using the 'zexy/'
prefix. how is that possible, although zexy was compiled as
multi class library? is that _the_ solution to have multiclass
libs and separate namespaces at the same time?
it's definitely not backwards compatibility safe to replace all built-in
[pack]/[unpack] by the zexy versions, since the zexy versions reads the
'f' and 's' literally and thus some patches produce lots of errors (due
to inlets receiving 'f' instead of '0', for instance).

Updated the packages with minor scons fixes. I also added a picture
of the main help file, which will tell you a little about what the set
of pd externals do: http://mtg.upf.edu/static/libsms/sms-help.jpg
I saw that my scons installer is not yet working too well in os x.. I
think it is because it cannot find the directories where
headers/libraries are installed. So I added the basic ones that I
could think of (and what worked on my friend's macbook). Also, there
is a "verbose" command that can be given to scons that will print out
what directories it is about to look for the libraries.

I think it will compile in the static libary too, if it is found.
What is the error you are getting? My guess is scons is not finding
libsndfile at all.

The problem is that it is hard to find examples of scons being used to
build pd externals. And I personally do not like make :)

Hopefully within a few weeks of testing the install problems will be
smoothed out. I have it working on my G4 in the office, but I mainly
compile things just like I would in linux. I know this is different
from most Mac users, which is a large population of the Pd community.
Sorry to the Windows users.. I have sort of given up on trying to get
things to build there.

By the way, it seems that one argument in a "donecanvasdialog" message
corresponds to both the "graph on parent" and "hide object name"
toggles in the gui dialog -- 0 for both toggles off, 1 for just GOP on
-- any other integer for both toggles on.

In this case, it was 30fps and 48000Hz, so it is an even multiple. I
guess it seems odd to me to be using ~ objects for the frame clock,
but I suppose it could be not so weird. But if this is all in Pd,
then the timing should be coming from the same place either way, right?

Hi,
the lib refuses to load under OS X.4 and OS X.5 on a mactel machine.
It is for sure the i38 version. I get the error message
"mach-o, but wrong architecture"
of which I don't have a clue how I can improve the situation.
I do not believe that it is me, the lib at the same location runs
well on my ancient and very slo G4 book. Remains something that I
haven't seen yet.
Does anybody use the lib under OS X on an intelmac? Alternatively,
how does it run under Linux? I might just install Linux on my mactel
book...
Best
Jurgen
I am trying to make a version of [line~] that gives me a line based
on the frame numbers I give it. Basically, I give it a frame counter
in the first inlet, then start frame and stop frame as arguments.
The hard part is that I want it to behave like [line] in that the
last value stays in effect until something else overrides it.
How do I do that with DSP data? If I use [switch~], then the
[outlet~] will just retain its last value.

Hi all,
As some may know, I have been working on updating the SMS code Xavier
Serra wrote during his PhD to work in modern-day, real-time systems.
It is working quite nice now and decently documented, so here is the
first announcement of libsms, a C library for Spectral Modeling
Synthesis things. This library is meant to be a clean and efficient
implementation of analysis, synthesis, and manipulations in the
spectral domain based on the many publications and hours of the people
that came before me.
I began working on this project because I wanted to use SMS techniques
in Pure Data, so I have been building a Pd library of externals
alongside libsms. These still need a little more work to get rid of a
few known bugs, but the synthesis is clean and fun. It by far
surpasses the attempts I previously made with just Pd objects and an
external oscillator bank (this was Trax.pd).
So go here, download it and tell me what you think!
http://mtg.upf.edu/static/libsms/
Of course, this works really nice on my ubuntu machine, and I've been
working out the compiling issues in OS X. But who knows, the project
is still young. So if things don't work, or if there are any other
issues that come to mind, please let me know.
cheers,
Rich
hi all
yesterday i tested a GEM motion detection patch with a friends laptop to
find that PD crashed really badly after few seconds. It looked to us
like it crashed when there was big changes on the incoming data (sudden
movement in front of the camera...).
The funny thing is that my friends laptop is a brand new Asus laptop
running Vista and mine is an old IBM with XP. So the Asus should be much
more powerful than mine... but there is no problem at all in mine with
same patch.
We were using PD extended 0.39 on Vista, the camera is integrated, I
could not check the type of graphics card and camera (no time sorry).
Just noticed that there was no output on the PD console at all, just
crashed.
We noticed that we could remove either pix_movement or pix_blob from the
chain and then it would not crash. So it looked like the combination was
problematic.
i know this is not very good description of the problem but does it ring
any bell? thanks!

Hey again,
I'm doing some experiments on artoolkit in different host software.
After not getting pix_artoolkit compiling until know (anybody out there
with a running setup?) I wanted to try a freeframe plugin that handles
tracking. Originally it's written for vvvv:
http://vvvv.org/tiki-index.php?page=FreeFrameARTK%2BTracker.
In vvvv it's working quite well, but preferring open source software I'd
like to have it working in pd too. Creating pix_freeframe with that
plugin is working (at least it shows some information about the argument
inlets in debug output), but it has only one single outlet (in vvvv it
has additional outlets, which output the tracking data). So my question
here: is that plugin incompatible with pix_freeframe or will it use that
single output for everything? Because of an other Problem I got into
(other Topic), I can't test it by looking at the output yet, there's
only gemlist.
From what I read about pix_freeframe it only has one outlet - but
perhaps it would be possible to modify pix_freeframe? Or take code from
it for another external (I know, that's easy to say but lots of work,
I'll try it on my own after learning some more c++ stuff)
Sorry for writing too much...

Dear Pd community,
RjDj is looking for a Pd patcher from Canada for a scene production with
G. Geiger and D. Taylor in Vancouver next week.
As some of you may have already noticed, RjDj on the iPhone is getting along
quite successful. Two weeks after RjDj launched in October, the application was
downloaded ~10.000 times, and the count is still growing. The reactive music
pieces for RjDj (we call them "Scenes") are written in Pd (vanilla), so now
there are 10.000 more people who have a variant of Pd installed and can listen
to Pd patches.
The main goal of RjDj is to give these people new food for their ears! To
reach this goal, RjDj tries to connect people from the Pd world with musicians
and producers in the "traditional" music area by doing sprints and also by
organizing studio sessions where Pd experts work with musicians on the
production of RjDj scenes to be released on the Iphone.
One such session will happen on
Nov 17-23 in Vancouver/CA
For this session we are looking for one additional Pd patcher!
If you want to take part, you will be working together with Guenter Geiger of
RjDj on the Pd side and music producer Damian Taylor (www.damiantaylor.com).
RjDj will financially support this gettogether and take care of hosting you, but
as we don't have endless money to burn, we're looking for people who can fly in
from a place that is not too far away from Vancouver, e.g. people from Canada,
Montreal, or so.
If all this sounds like it would be something for you, please contact us
offlist as soon as possible through: info(a)rjdj.me to discuss further details.
Keep on patching!

Hello
somebody nows how tomake a script in OSX to load a PD patch selecting a specific sound decive ( MOTU sound card) and 8 channells?....
When I start PD manually it select by default the Imac soundcard so
I have to select the device (MOTU) in media>portaudio manually ....
I need to make a script with a especific configuration because is for a sound installation
any advance is welcome, sorry for bad english

Hey all,
I just did a quick hack job on Frank's improved nqpoly4 to make
nqpoly5. It is very similar to the nqpoly4 but loadbangs work
properly, thanks to the use of IOhannes' very useful [initbang].
I removed Frank's two additional inlets for number and patch name,
since those wouldn't have working loadbang support. It's easy to
send a loadband to each patch instance that nqpoly creates, but then
all of the abstractions inside of that would not be so easy to send
loadbangs to.
Here's the code:

It seems that this should become its own thread....
So, I still have not heard about the bar, but it would be nice to see
what times that people would be interested in holding this event. I
would think that with Thanksgiving coming up, that we shouldn't begin
until after that, maybe the first or second Sunday of December. That
would be either the 7th, or the 14th. And as I mentioned before, early
afternoon might be the easiest times to acquire, as they don't have
any regularly scheduled events. (They do have some bands on Sunday
nights, but that is not til after 9.)

Hi I am trying to install Zexy 2.1 on Mac OS X Leopard....it is
starting to get annoying at this stage because it will not install for
me....I mean I am not quite sure as to how to install different
libraries anyway but I successfully managed (fluked) doing it before
with Gem and one or two others....
at the moment when i start up PD i am getting cant load library for
Zexy, gridflow and also for framestein....
is it a compatibility issue with OS X or else is it someting I am
doing wrong....undoubtedly it is the latter case if anything...
Thanks,
Conor
just to conclude:
today i installed pd from the intrepid repos and this is working
beautifully.
(thanks or the tip, frank...)
gem (also from the repo) segfaults immediately
audio has to go the oss route for (more or less) working without
crackles.
seems that the eeepc901 has still some way to go. but after all, it
wasn´t mant for that either :-)
thanks to everybody

Instead, we would want them set to 15kHz as the comment says?

It would be so nice to have an exegesis of each number and object in
the patch. As you say in your book, digital filter design is a huge
subject. I'd love to be able to honestly say that I would like to
devote myself to learning it, but truthfully I just want a cookbook
for creating a low pass filter to do the application of oversampling.

Hans,
I finally got around to putting this in place, and I found that the
append message doesn't seem to work. It does appear to be there, as it
prints out 'textwidget_append' to the console, but nothing appears to
get appended to the text...
Attached is a basic example.

Hello:
I'm trying to understand J07.oversampling.pd. Is the structure of the
3-pole, 3-zero Butterworth low-pass filter specific to the 16x
upsampling? Should it be different for 32x upsampling?
Cheers,
David
Hi all,
I'm trying to build the latest pd-vanilla (0.41-4) on a Mac PowerPC G4
running os x, but seeing strange linking errors. The computer is a
hand-me-down from another programmer, not the freshest install to say
the least. Configure works fine, but when I make I get a warning that
"-arch i386" was specified to ld, and then errors about undefined
symbols.
I realize this is something wrong with my build tools, but don't see
where to find the solution. I tried re-installing xcode 2.4, didn't
help. Also, I compiled a non-pd related c library just fine..
Any suggestions?
regards,
Rich
I suppose it's too much to ask, but I see all this talk about patching
circles and people getting together, and it's all so far from me. So,
I'll hold out just a little hope that there are a few folks in the
Detroit area (I'm in Port Huron, about an hour away from downtown
Detroit) who might be interested in regular meetings.
Thank you for letting me use up some of your bandwidth.
Regards,
Darren Landrum

It is nice to see a number of people in Chicago. I don't really have
any place to hold something like this, but would love to get more
involved with others here in town. So far, my learning of PD has been
quite in solitary confinment, and there are times when it would be
nice to get someone else's perspective. The list is great, but
sometimes having immediate feedback would be nice.

Hey,
I cc'ed the list since I think many people can contribute to this topic.
That's great! Personally, I haven't really used the wiki page to
organize a meeting, but some have. I basically talk to lots of
people in person, and email them. I get a group of people to commit
to a date and time first, like maybe 5 people. Then announce it,
sometimes advertising using their names. I was running regular
Arduino Hacklabs, and made a page for that if you are interested:
http://www.arduino.cc/playground/Main/NYCHacklab
I have heard there are some Pders at Art Institute, I don't know if
you have any connection to them.

hi Rob.
no that wasn't meant to be off-list, however it might have acidentialy
got off-list ;(
sorry for confusing, i meant 'my squat' ..
i think i was ansvering 10 emails in a row at that point and hadn't paid
enough attention to what i actually wrote ;..(
i think we actually should shift this discussion to pd-list or everyone
is on openlab-list anyway?

hey listers,
just wondering if anyone has any nice patches for making dubstep noises, or
tips for doing dubstep style production in Pd. in particular i'm interested
in making the huge stupid bass wubwubwubwubwubwub noise - i figure it's a
square wave passed through a highly resonant lowpass filter, with the
wubwub coming from modulating the filter cutoff frequency, but i don't have
access to club-style subwoofers so it'd be nice to know some tricks to make
it sound genuine. for example, do you put another layer of pure sine under
there to flesh it out a bit, or use pairs of square oscillators in detuned
octaves, or whatever..
any thoughts appreciated.
