hello
The last official Gem release is 5 year old today!
5 years is a lot's of time. I usually think a project is dead after 5 years with no release, but Gem is still alive. There are lot's of update / bugfixes / new feature / help patch etc I can see about 1800 commit in Iohannes github branch since 11 11 2011. there is also some merge request that are waiting to be include in this branch.
maybe it's time to think of a new release?
I know that a release is a lot's of work. And I don't know if anyone is still able to compile Gem for recent OSX, or windows. But without any release, users will disappear, and development will slowly fade away.
So, is there something that need to be done before creating a new release? is it just a lack of time / motivation that prevent releasing? or just that Gem is now only for linux?
What could be done to facilitate a new release? Or should I just send mails to Iohannes until he get bored and do all the job?
cheers, Cyrille
hey cyrille,
i would be up for testing on OSX. it has compiled before for me (last year) but we are still missing working AVFoundation plugin, New Sierra still has Quicktime framework but am assuming it will be gone next release.... so I agree, this is probably the best time to push forward with a release.
maybe a meet up / discussion in NYC pdcon could be motivational...
cheers m

Hi all,
If IOhannes is interested we could host it during our final roundtable sessions.
If however, you’d all be interested in having a workbench session like the one Katja is doing for Pd and library compilation we could arrange something like that too..
best,

there is also github for logging, discussing and closing issues that might be helpful....
- what need to be done to compile on osX?
just compiled on 10.12 (sierra) when i got home. the github instructions work with the exception that "--without-quicktime-framework" flag is needed because all headers, etc were removed in the most recent Xcode, apparently due to depreciation next year I assume.
the ofx people have a solution to download the 10.11 sdk and add it to xcode to compile with Quicktime for 10.12 although again, Quicktime will be completely removed in next OSX release... so do we bother with dealing with Quicktime anymore at all or just put time and resource into finishing what Dan started with the AVFoundation plugin?
so film, image and capture are broken on OSX AFAIK
another solution might be to go the gmerlin route but im not sure if burkhard still maintains it, and if so if it is even worth the effort IDK... but with this scenario Apple is left out of the equation so in the future whatever they depreciate, etc will have less bearing on future dev.... but maybe im wrong about this. also i do not think gmerlin does capture.

maintenance of gmerlin seems to be at a bare minimum. last time i talked with burkhard about it, he was surprised to learn that there are still applications using it (apart from his own).

Nowdays, there are lot's of online resource about shaders. I think Gem provide the minimum to understand how to work with shaders in Gem.
I have no plan to create more shader example, unless i've missed an important feature. But is someone else want to create more example, he is welcome.

hello,
maybe we can try starting on the mailing list, and if a specific question need to be discuss, we can join on IRC.
So, the questions i've got are :
- is a mandatory feature is missing?
- is help files up to date with all new functionalities?
- what need to be done to compile on osX?
- what need to be done to compile on windows?
Is there enough abstractions using shaders for simple effects like contrast, brightness, hue, saturation, etc. that can replace pix_* objects.
Nowdays, there are lot's of online resource about shaders. I think Gem provide the minimum to understand how to work with shaders in Gem.
I have no plan to create more shader example, unless i've missed an important feature. But is someone else want to create more example, he is welcome.
I copied the entire Book of Shaders examples for pd about a year ago, and with the help of Dan Wilcox made it so you can copy-paste Shadertoy examples straight into Pd as well.
You can find it here under graphics: https://github.com/danomatika/ BangYourHead
there is a lot of nice shaders in there.
when making this collection, did you experience problem that was not addressed in the basic shaders examples? cyrille
Is there enough examples/99.games (or something else) as "case study" ?
there will never be enough! ;-) but again, adding more should slow down a release cycle.

so we just need to do that,

great! so i guess the current shader collection in gem exemple is ok.
However, this is a nice collection, and deserved to be advertised for people looking for example. how about adding the link to :

?

A friend of mine (aptly named John Camera) has started working on the GEM code recently with a focus mainly on Windows. He has updated some of the build stuff and a few internals to make it build/run on Win10 and latest VS.
Also, he has expressed interest in attempting the GL ES port or looking into WebGL.

Or should I just send mails to Iohannes until he get bored and do all the job?
cheers, Cyrille

yes, it sound exiting! My only concern is about development time: I think creating a release now and include this development for the next one (hopefully not in 5 years) is the way to go.
