Summary: .xa10120: no such object
Initial Comment:
Hi,
This seems to happen under "random" circumstances. It happened to me with every kind of patches (simple and complex) and usually NOT in a sistematic manner (that is, the same patch which once triggers the bug, after restarting PD never does again...)
However, this patch that I attach does sistematically make this happen, at least to me under Windows XP.
The following error message appears in the output window:
>> .xa10120: no such object
This particular patch uses "scripting", i.e. it creates and deletes an object in a subpatch iteratively; however, I saw this same bug happen a lot of times with patches which didn't make any use of scripting at all. I attach this just because it is the only one I have that is sure to trigger the bug.
Sorry I can't "isolate" it further.

I guess it may be windows-specific.
I am reproducing it right now with 0.40-2 vanilla on Windows XP.
Can anyone else reproduce it in windows?
(does anyone else use windows?)
Please note that it is NOT in ANY WAY specific to dinamically creating
patches or objects in patches. It happens to me a lot every day working
with patches that never do anything dynamically and that don't use dyn (nor
any external for what it's worth).
However, here is a typical situation which triggers the bug in my everyday
life:
-work with some rather "big" patch which uses a lot of abstractions (which
I did myself), including a some of them used more than once i.e. a few
instances of the same abstraction; and abstractions contain other
abstractions and so on (no weird infinite loop or anything, just a bit
complex)
-open (with file/open) separately the file of an abstraction which is
being used in the main patch (or inside some other abstraction used in the
main patch etc), edit and save it.
This will for some reason automatically open and close all patch windows
which contain occurences of the saved abstraction (which is quite slow and
quite annoying but is better than older versions which used to open them
without closing), AND produce the mentioned error message.
When this happen, I'm not sure whether the stability and correct behaviour
of PD is compromised, so I usually restart it.
Note however that this is a lot different from the situation exemplified
by the attached patch, and both trigger the bug.

I haven't been able to reproduce the problem on win32 pd vanilla 0.40-2,
but,
I've had this problem a lot of time on win32, it always happen when I
create patches dynamically, after an amount of created(/destroyed) patches,
the object maker isn't able to make any new object and send these tk path
names error messages.
Sometimes the tk binding become erroneous within this problem, yesterday
when the bug occured, the Font Bomb windows was opened with clicking on
'FileMenu' button, Media Settings on 'Cancel' button, and SavePanel on 'Ok'
button
But I haven't been able to determine if this is caused by an external or
not.
The problem also occur when the patches are created with the [dyn~]
external.

provoke the error either.

AAARGH sorry, I messed this up totally!!!
(I can't edit or rewrite it, can I?)
I meant:
* [key] outputs a 27 when Escape is pressed, an 8 when backspace is
pressed (that's fine)
* [keyup] outputs 0 when Escape or Backspace is released.
I confirm this, on Windows XP. (vanilla 0.40.2)
There's no [keydown] at all, of course. I just messed it up.
Sorry for the (recurrent!) lapsus.
Feel free to delete and repost the bug report if you can/want
Thanks
m.

On Linux [keyup] correctly gives 27 when Escape is released. AFAIK there
is no [keydown] object, at least to in Vanilla-Pd. Where is this object
from?

Summary: keyname issues in Windows
Initial Comment:
I only have tested this on Windows XP.
The [keyname] doesn't handle correctly at least the following keys:
- space bar
- enter
- escape
It doesn't correctly return the key name on the right outlet.
With the space bar key, it returns "symbol ", which probably is "symbol" plus a space, but however, "symbol space" or something like that would be more appropriate, since in PD a space in a message is equivalent to just nothing and there is no way to handle it as far as I understand.
With enter key, it seems to output "symbol " followed by the actual newline character (appears as a square in the output window in Windows)
With the escape key, it has a peculiar and incoherent behaviour: on keydown, it outputs "symbol " plus some special character (and outputs a 1 on the left outlet), while on keyup it outputs "symbol Escape" (and a 0 on the left outlet) which is correct.
I think all keys should have a name.
However, if we accept that some keys don't have a name, I think [keyname] shouldn't output anything when those keys are pressed or releases, just like [key] and [keyup] don't output anything when an unrecognized key is pressed.

Thanks fbar,
now I understand the behaviour of keyname better.
However, I don't see the coherence between how it behaves with keys such
as "Left", "Shift_R", "F1" on one side, and how it behaves with keys such
as space, tab, backspace on the other side.
With ENTER and ESC and BACKSPACE there's clearly a bug however.
Note that ESC and BACKSPACE output different symbols on keyup and
keydown.
Also, I don't think it is "acceptable" that a symbol exsists that cannot
be written literally (either with or without some kind of escape
sequence).
Let's suppose that @ is the <mistery char for space> and that ç is the
<mistery char for tab>.
For a one-item select you can use your "makefilename %c" trick, but you
can't write a
[select @ ç foo bar] for example.

Attached patch shows that Pd recognizes most whitespace keys correctly.
Also Backspace and Escape act differently. The only keys I couldn't make to
work were the RETURN key and other special keys like HOME, END or PageUP.
Note that you need to create the symbols for the special characters inside
Pd using a special method: [makefilename %c] and the ASCII code.
"symbol <mystery_char_for_space>" is something different
from "symbol " (2 spaces!) and also different from "symbol 32" or "symbol
SPACE".
I believe, the way keyname handles this ATM is okay.

Summary: after Save As..., the path remains at the location
Initial Comment:
If you open an instance of an abstraction, then Save
As... to somewhere else, the path of that abstraction
stays at the original location, even though the file
was saved to the new location. Clicking File->Save
will then save to the original location rather than the
new location.

Strange, I looked into this. It seems that just the title bar isn't being
updated, but the patch does think of itself in the new location. [getdir]
will show the new location. It seems that when canvas_rename() is called
inside of canvas_savetofile(), the directory is not yet updated, when
things get to canvas_reflecttitle(), and therefore canvas_getdir() returns
the old location rather than the new one. Since this is now cosmetic, I'll
leave it for another day.

"Save As..." means write out a new file. A new file means a
new class. The instance that started this process remains
the old class, therefore is no longer related to this new class.
This means its inconsistent to have this instance remain as
the original class.
Also, from a usability perspective, it makes things much
more coherent. In every other app that I use, when I do
"Save As...", that current view changes to the new file. It
does not remain on the old file.

I'm note sure if that's a bug, though I agree, that it's
confusing. But if you open an instance of an abstraction and
save that under a different name, this action doesn't affect
the name of the abstraction's instance as it is used in the
parent patch: This one will stay the same. If you want to
use your newly saved abstraction you need to rename the
instance to the new name as well first.

It's because you make it as a single symbol. In Pd, gensym()
can turn any null-terminated string into a symbol. When you
copy+paste, the contents of the comment don't change, they
point to the same symbol. When you save to
a file, however, it gets printed without quoting, because
quoting is not supported (or not fully), so for a lot of
possible symbols there's no syntax that you can use to
produce them literally, you have to go thru gensym()
explicitly instead (e.g. [sprintf]).
Copy+paste only copies a t_atom[] whereas saving/loading
calls binbuf_save/binbuf_eval.

Yeah, comments are parsed by pd exactly like objectboxes.
it's just that no actual object is instantiated (binbuf_eval
is not called). That was necessary to avoid having to
introduce strings in pd and/or making a special case for
comments.

This bug works differently, however. Every number followed
by a dot and
a space is affected, however comments starting with a letter
and a dot
aren't. So this comment is okay:
a. something
but this isn't:
numbers: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Pd converts floating point numbers in comments if possible, so
they don't contain floating points anymore.
