would be nice for this change to be included in all pd releases.
note that actually Pd must be patched [1] for making it install on
Gentoo without the QA tool reporting access violations.
[1] one-liner fix:
sed -i -e 's:\($(libdir)/pd\):$(DESTDIR)\1:' makefile.in
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[from http://www.gnu.org/prep/standards]
|DESTDIR| is a variable prepended to each installed target file, like this:
$(INSTALL_PROGRAM) foo $(DESTDIR)$(bindir)/foo
$(INSTALL_DATA) libfoo.a $(DESTDIR)$(libdir)/libfoo.a
The |DESTDIR| variable is specified by the user on the |make| command
line as an absolute file name. For example:
make DESTDIR=/tmp/stage install
|DESTDIR| should be supported only in the |install*| and |uninstall*|
targets, as those are the only targets where it is useful.
If your installation step would normally install /usr/local/bin/foo and
/usr/local/lib/libfoo.a, then an installation invoked as in the example
above would install /tmp/stage/usr/local/bin/foo and
/tmp/stage/usr/local/lib/libfoo.a instead.
Prepending the variable |DESTDIR| to each target in this way provides
for staged installs, where the installed files are not placed directly
into their expected location but are instead copied into a temporary
location (|DESTDIR|). However, installed files maintain their relative
directory structure and any embedded file names will not be modified.
You should not set the value of |DESTDIR| in your Makefile at all; then
the files are installed into their expected locations by default. Also,
specifying |DESTDIR| should not change the operation of the software in
any way, so its value should not be included in any file contents.
|DESTDIR| support is commonly used in package creation. It is also
helpful to users who want to understand what a given package will
install where, and to allow users who don't normally have permissions to
install into protected areas to build and install before gaining those
permissions. Finally, it can be useful with tools such as |stow|, where
code is installed in one place but made to appear to be installed
somewhere else using symbolic links or special mount operations. So, we
strongly recommend GNU packages support |DESTDIR|, though it is not an
absolute requirement.

Summary: fix DESTDIR support in makefile.in
Initial Comment:
support for staged installs (i.e. using $(DESTDIR) variable in Makefile) is broken.
what I mean is that some items are installed into $(DESTDIR), while some other are installed to /
perhaps, some time ago the Makefile used to support staged installs, but then someone forgot to add $(DESTDIR) to new install items?
staged installs are very important, read here why:
http://www.gnu.org/prep/standards/html_node/DESTDIR.html
(for example it breaks the installation of Gentoo - luckily I already patch pd into the ebuild)

today I restored a working pd-extended-0.40 package for Gentoo
you can find it at the usual place, pd-overlay [1], or as a single
ebuild [2]
I also provided a build log on my machine (athlon-xp; x86), just FYI, to
check compiler warnings, issues with QA (notices about poor programming
practices, runtime text relocations, ...), installed files, ... [3]
cheers! (waiting for pd-extended-0.41 branch ;))

Summary: [change] lets some duplicates thru
Initial Comment:
Sometimes some duplicates get through [change] since it is doing a != for the comparison. Instead it should do a comparison with a set precision, something like this:
http://howto.wikia.com/wiki/Howto_compare_float_numbers_in_the_C_programmin…
//compares if the float f1 is equal with f2 and returns 1 if true and 0 if false
int compare_float(float f1, float f2)
{
float precision = 0.00001;
if (((f1 - precision) < f2) &&
((f1 + precision) > f2))
{
return 1;
}
else
{
return 0;
}
}

I don't have access to a Vista machine. I tried opening the [select] help
file on WinXP using 0.40.3-extended-20080616 and it did not crash. Maybe
try the most recent version? Or try removing [multiselect] from that help
file.

This seems to be fixed now in 0.40.3-extended-20080614, I am guessing the
crash was related to the hexloader logic that IOhannes recently fixed.
