Summary: PD cannot connect to jack if pulseaudio is running
Initial Comment:
Using the Pd-0.40.3-extended-20080408-debian-stable-i386.deb autobuild ...
On Ubuntu Hardy, PD has problems connecting to jack when the pulseaudio sound server is running, which it is by default. Upon killing pulse, pd can connect to jack correctly. Other applications using jack such as ardour and audacity work correctly.
Note: I am running jack on an external sound card.

i have never touched the settings of gnome-open, so i am not sure why it does not work...
most likely (well, i am sure that) this is problem of gnome-open; however i think it does not add to a positive first glance...

sensible-browser will not do that, but neither do firefox, iceweasel or
lynx:
$ lynx irc://localhost
Alert!: Unsupported URL scheme!
If you want to open irc-urls as well, you shouldn't include any pure
webbrowsers in the choice list.
But if you want to start any webbrowser, sensible-browser is the standard
Debian tool. It allows users to configure their favourite web browser in a
central place. Many other Debian packages use sensible-browser for that
task.

AFAIK, gnome-open will open any type of URL, like irc://, etc. and send it
to the correct app. That is why I put gnome-open and xdg-open first. Will
'sensible-browser' do that?

I think, for Debian packages "sensible-browser" should be the first one.
If not already done, you could add a recommendation for "debianutils" to
the dependencies for the package, sensible-browser is part of that. I would
do a real "depends" for debianutils, as Pd works without browser as well.
Many people don't use Gnome, especially on dedicated audio machines, and
sensible-browser in turn can start the other browsers. If it doesn't start
the correct browser it's a bug in the Debian package and we could report it
upstream.

Here's the current code:
http://pure-data.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/pure-data/branches/pd-extended/…
549 foreach candidate \
550 { gnome-open xdg-open sensible-browser iceweasel firefox
mozilla \
551 galeon konqueror netscape lynx } {
552 set browser [lindex [auto_execok $candidate]
0]
553 if {[string length $browser]} {
554 puts stderr [format "%s '%s'" $browser
$filename]
555 exec -- sh -c [format "%s '%s'" $browser
$filename] &
556 break
557 }
558 }
If someone wants to test this more in depth, and make a patch, that would
be quite useful.

Since you are using KDE, I recommend:
apt-get remove gnome-open
The URLs in the Help menu work for me on Ubuntu, Debian/GNOME, Mac OS X,
and Windows. I don't use KDE at all, so if you can make it work better
there, please do.

Summary: problems with "jack fixes and enhancements" patch
Initial Comment:
Ok,
After upgrading to Ubuntu Hardy I tried pd with jack and everything seemingly was working. Today I sat down to do some music using my external usb sound card (Edirol UA-25) and lo and behold Pd goes nuts. All afternoon I have tracked down these issues using Pd-0.40.3-extended-20080408-debian-stable-i386.deb from the autobuilds.
- the -jack startup flag does not work
- if using the -jack startup flag, trying using the jack selection in Media does not work, you cannot make the jack connection to work
- starting pd without the -jack startup flag allows you to select jack from Media and make the connection
- trying to connect to jack (once again from the Media menu) if its controlling an EXTERNAL audio device immediately slows down X to about 5fps and causes Pulseaudio to stutter. Everything is fine on killing pd.
As suggested by Hans, I tried a build before the recent jack bugfix patch (http://pure-data.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/pure-data/branches/pd-extended/…) and I am able to connect to the external card running jack ... but the startup flag does not work.

OK, I have tested the 2 builds as suggested:
- Pd-0.40.3-extended-20080414-debian-testing
* jack connection works fine, both on internal laptop and usb
soundcards
* the "-jack" startup flag fails making the jack connection and once pd
starts, it cannot be started via the media menu either (the little check
boxes in the jack popup are not checked, and checking them has no effect).
pd has to be restarted without the flag and jack chosen through the menu
for jack to work.
* a little pulseaudio stuttering when pd first starts (but not a big
problem, probably my slow laptop)
- Pd-0.40.3-extended-20080416-debian-testing-i386
* jack connection works on internal soundcard
* jack connection on my usb soundcard does not work
- choosing jack from the media menu causes either a segfault or a 5
fps X and heavily stuttering pulseaudio (running on the internal card)
- once the popup appears things return to normal (the boxes are
checked too), but performance goes crazy again once the popup is clicked
- closing the pd window returns things to normal when the close pd
dialog appears
* jack startup flag still does not work as noted above
* no pulseaudio stuttering on pd startup, just on pd exit

danomatika, could you try testing a build from 2008-04-14 and 2008-04-16,
right before and after the commit that we think is causing the problem?
That would remove a lot of variables as to waht might be causing this
problem.

After a little testing today the -jack flag works fine using the earlier
the Pd-0.40.3-extended-20080210-debian-stable-i386.deb build. So it must
be something in the bugfix that messes up using external cards ...

After a little testing today the -jack flag works fine using the earlier
the Pd-0.40.3-extended-20080210-debian-stable-i386.deb build. So it must
be something in the bugfix that messes up using external cards ...

Ok, I made console-window-related key bindings work when the Pd window has
focus,
fixing most of bug #1964296 (all except the fact the the "Pd window" menu
item
doesn't raise the Pd window on GNU/Linux unless that window has been
iconified
since the Pd window had focus.)
So I'll close this bug since it is about key bindings, and those work now.

Summary: http-links do not open...
Initial Comment:
when i click on "Help->report bug" i get the following error on the stderr and nothing happens:
/usr/bin/gnome-open 'http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=55736&atid=478070'
Error showing url: There was an error launching the default action command associated with this location.
same with all other http URLs.
the IRC-one works fine (it also uses gnome-open)
this is on debian lenny/sid with Pd-0.40.3-extended-20080514-debian-stable-i386.deb
i am using KDE and not gnome.
i have never touched the settings of gnome-open, so i am not sure why it does not work...
most likely (well, i am sure that) this is problem of gnome-open; however i think it does not add to a positive first glance...

Here's the current code:
http://pure-data.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/pure-data/branches/pd-extended/…
549 foreach candidate \
550 { gnome-open xdg-open sensible-browser iceweasel firefox
mozilla \
551 galeon konqueror netscape lynx } {
552 set browser [lindex [auto_execok $candidate]
0]
553 if {[string length $browser]} {
554 puts stderr [format "%s '%s'" $browser
$filename]
555 exec -- sh -c [format "%s '%s'" $browser
$filename] &
556 break
557 }
558 }

Summary: bsaylor's [pvoc~] and [partconv~] not found
Initial Comment:
[pvoc~] and [partconv~] externals cannot be found because the path isn't added by libdir (the rest of the externals in the folder appear to be in extra/flatspace, so they can be found. adding /usr/local/lib/pd/extra/bsaylor to the paths list fixes this.
Should the bsaylor externals in flatspace be removed and the libdir path added?

There has been a freeze on adding more libraries to be loaded by default
in Pd-extended since it is not a good situation (see discussion about
adding the mrtof lib). Use [import] or [declare] to load the libraries you
need for your patch. They work, albeit not perfectly, and they will be
improved in the near future.
