Greetings,
I really don't intend to start a SCM war here, but has the discussion of
switching to using svn on sourceforge instead of cvs ever come up before?
Instead of rambling on about reasons why I think svn would be nicer than cvs, I
am curious if people have any reasons _not_ to switch.
The amount that it would increase my happiness when working with the pure-data
repository is enough that I would volunteer to put forth the leg work to do the
conversion, and to write a quick guide for …
[View More]developers with commit access, if
people were interested and willing to let me do it. :) I help admin a fairly
large svn server (svn.digium.com and svncommunity.digium.com), and I found the
following guide for doing the conversion for a sourceforge project. It looks
fairly easy to do ...

Hey all,
I'm trying to track down a strange baseline CPU usage in a patch of
mine. Basically I load the patch and it will show a certain baseline CPU
amount, even with audio off, no rendering, and no control messages
flowing (except for those initially set off by the loadbangs). loading
with -noloadbang does not show the baseline CPU.
The amount of CPU seems proportional to the number of abstractions in
the patch (about 800 kills the machine at 90%+, 400 uses about 40%)
So I'd like to see …
[View More]what PD functions are using up all the CPU.
I've compiled a PD with ./configure --enable-debug and I do see the -g
in the makefile, but oprofile still only shows "pd" as a blackbox.
For Gem I needed to do something with the "strip" stuff, but I don't see
any corresponding features in the PD makefile.
Any suggestions?
Thanks all,
B. Bogart

Greetings,
I really like how this list encourages introductions of people that are new to
the development community. It's nice to see where other people are coming from.
A few years ago, I started working on the open source project, Asterisk
(http://www.asterisk.org). Asterisk is an open source telephony applications
platform. It is most often used as a typical phone system, but it is really a
toolkit where we try to make it possible to do whatever you want to with a phone
call.
While in …
[View More]school, I started working part-time for Digium, the company that
sponsors Asterisk. I have been working full time for Digium since January of
2007. I now hold the position of Senior Software Engineer, and Open Source Team
Lead.
About a month ago, I visited New York University's ITP program. I was there to
meet people that had done some extremely creative projects that involved
Asterisk. I was looking for new ideas, or things that I could work on to make
Asterisk easier to use as a part of a larger creative project. Whlie I was
there, I briefly met Hans-Christoph Steiner. He gave me a quick rundown of
pure-data as we walked down the street. We chatted about how there could be
some interesting applications between Asterisk and Pd. So, I have been looking
at it since then.
I have since written a Jack interface for Asterisk so that I can hook up any
number of phone calls to other applications that support Jack. I am currently
trying to figure out how to make a Pd patch to do it. :)
While learning about Pd, I have started making some contributions to the source.
I have been reading code to learn how things work in Pd. Along the way, I have
been making little fixes to problems as I notice them. I am "russellbryant" on
the sourceforge patch tracker. Most of my changes so far have been little bugs
in string buffer handling. However, I do have one sourceforge patch pending
that fixes a remotely exploitable stack buffer overflow (marked as private so it
can only be viewed by project members).
I'm interested in commit access, if and whenever other project members would
feel comfortable with it. Mainly, I'm just interested in using it for smaller
bug fixes that are obvious enough for direct commit. I am now starting to look
into the implementation of the various parts of existing jack support in Pd. It
may be nice to be able to work on any larger changes in a developer branch or
something. (However, before I started committing anything, I would like to help
draft a patch workflow document, that describes what gets committed where, when,
and by whom, so that I can ensure that I don't step out of bounds. Please let
me know if something like this exists, and I missed it.)
Anyway, thanks to everyone who has contributed to Pd. This is a really cool
application. I hope that I can contribute something useful to the project.

oops,. then un-took it again, since it was acting funny (scrollbars
appeared and disappeared constantly when clicking inside the canvas
help window)

pd_autoscrollbars_2007-11-14.patch
- should fix #1830767 (Slide bars don't update automatically)
- moved code to pdtk_canvas_getscroll, thanks for the tip!
+ a new, empty patch should not have scrollbars

I think this functionality should probably be incorporated into
pdtk_canvas_getscroll in u_main.tk since it gets called on button release.
This should help with bug #1830767

This patch works well for resize events, but it prevents the scrollbars
from working properly when cutting, pasting, and adding objects. I'd like
to keep it in, but it needs to be fixed.

One other thing that would be fixed ideally. This problem
existed before this patch, but its related. If a patch is
bigger than the window, the scrollbars are not displayed
when that patch is opened. You have to resize the window,
then the scrollbars will display.

Very nice! My only comment is that it is a couple pixels
off on Mac OS X 10.4/Pd-extended 0.39.2-test5. I can cover
about 3 pixels before the scrollbars kick in.
I added to the Pd-extended build system as
pure-data/packages/patches/pd_autoscrollbars-0.40-pre.patch
It will be in the nightly builds starting tomorrow.

this patch removes scrollbars in a pd-patch canvas window
when the content is smaller than the window size.
and add scrollbars to pd-patch window if content bigger than
window size.
works individually for height(bottom scrollbar) and
width(right scrollbar)

Here's something I noticed in s_main.c, it looks like you meant to
have different font strings, but they are the same here:
62 #ifdef MSW
63 "Courier";
64 #else
65 "Courier";
66 #endif
Also, the command line -help has the Bitstream font listed tho it
looks like you are using Courier:
390 "-font-face <name> -- specify default font (default: Bitstream
Vera Sans Mono)\n",
.hc

Ideally, anywhere a float is valid, then inf, -inf, and nan should also be valid. For example, in [float] boxes as arguments, and in messages.

Summary: use single-precision math functions on Mac OS X
Initial Comment:
On Mac OS X, Pd is using the double precision math functions even though Pd uses single precision floats. You can see it here:
http://pure-data.cvs.sourceforge.net/pure-data/pd/src/x_arithmetic.c?view=m…
Here's a previous discussion on this:
http://lists.puredata.info/pipermail/pd-dev/2006-01/006042.html
I don't think this would make a massive difference overall, but I'll bet it would make a significant difference for any patch using sin, cos, atan, atan2, sqrt, log, exp, fabs, or pow.

Summary: Add a new Pd command line option, -autoload
Initial Comment:
I got tired of using the "-lib" option over and over, so I wrote a new option, "-autoload".
This option allows you to specify a directory of externals. All externals found in this directory, and any sub-directories, will be automatically loaded. So, you can run pd using something like ...
$ pd -autoload /usr/lib/pd/extra
or a non-default location of externals where some have just been compiled, for example ...
$ pd -autoload ~/src/pure-data/pd/extra
So far, the patch has only been tested on Linux.

Summary: Fix small potential stack overflow
Initial Comment:
Attached is a patch to fix another potential stack buffer overflow in s_main.c. I didn't send this over in private because I don't think it can be exploited in any useful way, so it's just a small bug.

Also, let me just clarify my original summary just a little bit.
You can cause the overrun of the buffer by providing a really long input
string to the -schedlib command line option. It's just not exploitable in
such a way that it would be considered a security issue.

I'm sorry for the stupid typo. That code is actually only compiled in for
a Windows build (whenever MSW is defined), so I didn't notice.

I am guessing there is a typo in that patch, since the new line also uses
sprintf() instead of snprintf():
- sprintf(filename, "%s.dll", sys_externalschedlibname);
+ sprintf(filename, sizeof(filename), "%s.dll",
sys_externalschedlibname);
