Hello!
I'm trying to use latest gem version from deken with Pd 0.49.0 64bit release from Miller on a windows10 machine.
I couldn't say which backend is loaded, it doesn't show in console.
[pix_image] doesn't load any image at all, [pix_film] crashes with mpg, avi is loaded but only show first frame, and it doesn't open mov file, [model] only load obj files...
Do I have to compile pd with mingw64 on this machine for having plugins working?
Thanks
hi,
thanks for testing.

it's supposed to load SGI-images (.rgb extension). the imageSGI backend is the only one, that doesn't have any external dependencies. the image will appear upside down (that's fixed in git already).
[pix_film] crashes with mpg,
but it works with AVI and MOV files? cool.
avi is loaded but only show first frame, and it doesn't open mov file,
ah, darn. can the mov files be played back with the windows media player?
[model] only load obj files...
the modelOBJ backend doesn't have any external dependencies (as opposed to the modelASSIMP backend). at least, this is not a regression wrt Gem-0.93, that would only load .obj models as well.
the main problem i see right now, is that any backends that require additional dependencies (provided by the various lib*.dll files shipped with Gem), do not seem to work at all :-(
how about [pix_video]?
I couldn't say which backend is loaded, it doesn't show in console.
actually it should, but you might need to raise the verbosity (e.g. "all", in the Pd-console window). the film & video backends are displayed when [pix_film] resp [pix_video] are first instantiated. the image backends will be printed when Gem is loaded, something like:
GEM: image loading support: SGI GEM: image saving support: SGI
the model-loading backends are currently not displayed at all.
(note to myself: this should be handled consistently for all backend systems)
you might also want to start Pd from the cmdline (rather than clicking on the Pd.exe), and raise the general verbosity to a higher level, using "-verbose -verbose -verbose" (the more the merrier)).
this should give you an indication about which backends (afaict: of any kind) are attempted to load. it also might give you a hint what goes wrong with the pugins that depend on 3rd party dlls. (if not in the Pd-console, then probably in the terminal)
also: do [text3d] and friends work?
Do I have to compile pd with mingw64 on this machine for having plugins working?
i don't hope so.

i don't think so.

Yes the console say it loads SGI backend for reading and recording images, but I don't know if it works because I don't have .rgb images and I don't know how Gem is able to record SGI-images.
can the mov files be played back with the windows media player?
yes
how about [pix_video]?
It does work with my webcam and the following pd console message:
videoInput-videoplugin $0 ... couldn't create info: driver videoInput videoctl: enumerate info: devices 1 info: device Integrated Webcam videoInput videoctl: device 0
you might also want to start Pd from the cmdline (rather than clicking on the Pd.exe), and raise the general verbosity to a higher level, using "-verbose -verbose -verbose" (the more the merrier)).

I've been running PureData from cmd for this test and I don't see any consistent message that could help but in doubt the log file is attached
also: do [text3d] and friends work?
yes they all work
thanks for testing.
I've also tested 32bit version of this release, no plugin at all were loaded, and it needs libwinpthread-1.dll from mingw32/bin that's why I've asked if Pd needs to be compiled with my machine, but I'd like to focus on 64bit version that almost work by just installing from deken...

some provided lib*.dll work when it's copied into pd/bin directory! I guess they would also work if they are into windows/wow64
GEM: image loading support: SGI jpeg tiff GEM: image saving support: SGI jpeg tiff
So I can go further into testing...
[pix_film]
*.mp4, *.avi show only the first frame
*.mpg only play 2 frames when I toggle auto or change the frameNum
*.mov doesn't load

integrated webcam works only when [device 0( is sent and console show this in red when I open another patch containing pix_video: [pix_video]: no valid video backend found
I'd like to test vnc device but I don't know how it works.
I could provide vlc dll but I don't know what version to use.
gem_modelASSIMP3.dll works! But [model] crashes when the help patch is closed.
just tried all examples and found some related bugs and some other bugs:
* fog doesn't work, fogmode > 0 show a black screen.
* gemwin show/hide cursor doesn't hide cursor.
* gemwin without borders prevent gem window from showing on the screen, it only show in taskbar, and offset works with borders... same thing happen on fullscreen mode, gem window disappear when fullscreen is toggled and only show in task bar.
* all examples before 02.advanced/16.vertex_program containing [model] doesn't crash, but with 02.advanced/16.vertex_program, 02.advanced/17.fragment_program, and 02.advanced/23.SplitScreen it crashes
* in 04.pix/05.film.pd homer.avi and anim-1.mov crashes, in 04.pix/06.movie.pd they stucks with stack overflow in pd console
* 04.pix/25.buffer crashes when loading alea.mpg
* 04.pix/26.framebuffer_readback crashes when closing patch
* 04.pix/27.bitmap_font : [pix_image]: failed to load image 'C:/Program Files/Pd/extra/Gem/examples/04.pix/../data/bitmap_font_6x8.bmp'
graphic card is GeForce GTX 1050 for following bugs:
* 10.glsl/01.simple_texture and 12.multi_screen_projection display only one pixel from the image loaded
* 10.glsl/08.multi_pass_rendering crashes when patch is closed
* 10.glsl/10.GPGPU_Physical_model doesn't work and crashes (debordement de la pile)

* 10.glsl/11.geometry and 10.glsl/16.vertexbuffer_attributes crashe at rendering
* 10.glsl/12.tri2fan crashes at rendering and patch is showing almost outside the screen
thanks for this new release!
and happy debbuging :D

i was suspecting something like this.
in the meantime, i might have fixed it. if you are daring you could try a CI-build:
- 64bit: https://git.iem.at/pd/Gem/-/jobs/artifacts/master/download?job=W64_snapshot - 32bit: https://git.iem.at/pd/Gem/-/jobs/artifacts/master/download?job=W32_snapshot
[pix_film]
*.mp4, *.avi show only the first frame
*.mpg only play 2 frames when I toggle auto or change the frameNum

- do they play with the last Gem release (on that very machine!) - does the .mov play with windows media player?

that's a bit weird. you can only have a single instance of [pix_video] accessing a given video device (e.g. your integrated webcam). you shouldn't get the "no valid video backend" message though.
I'd like to test vnc device but I don't know how it works.
i don't remember either :-)
I could provide vlc dll but I don't know what version to use.
try the latest.

umpf.
just tried all examples and found some related bugs and some other bugs:
- fog doesn't work, fogmode > 0 show a black screen.
oh my. i never even tested fogmode in years...
- gemwin without borders prevent gem window from showing on the screen,
it only show in taskbar,
so you cannot even switch to the window via the taskbar?
and offset works with borders...
i don't understand. if the [offset 200 200( can be used to position a window with borders, i'd consider this a feature (even if not possible in older Gem releases)

same thing happen on fullscreen mode, gem window disappear when fullscreen is toggled and only show in task bar.

oh i forgot. in order to properly test whether the new builds work, it would be great if you could remove all¹ the lib*.dll's from the pd/bin directory again.
ideally, for testing the pd/bin/ directory should always be pristine (that is: as shipped by miller puckette)

¹ all those, you just put in there to make the Gem plugins work.

This new build still need at least libwinpthread-1.dll shiped with archive in pd/bin directory following a windows error message when pd is launched with no lib*.dll at all, I guess it needs the other ones..

hmm, cannot reproduce in a VM.
last night i had a very strange experience, where the [gemwin] would only render in the top-left 500x500 pixels of the desktop (where the original Gem window was created). moving the Gem window around would disable rendering (and window updates) whereever the window and that original region would *not* overlap. ofcourse, i was unable to reproduce this in the morning.

On my machine menubar doesn't show up.
With [menubar 1( option gemwin only show up in taskbar but not on the screen.
I'd like to ask, is there a chance for [pix_film] to read any movie file in this release?
