Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. Category: Pixes (pix_ objects) Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 7 Private: No Submitted By: Hans-Christoph Steiner (eighthave) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: gem 0.93 does not play .mpg files on Mac OS X
Initial Comment: Pd-extended 0.43.1, 2012-04-02 32-bit on a MacBook Pro 3,1 running Mac OS X 10.6.8/Intel.
opening Gem -> examples -> 04.pix -> 05.film, then loading alea.mpg, it tells me the video is "1 frames (320x240) at 1.000000 fps" and procedes to make a fractal-like animation. Full Pd window log and screenshot attached

Message: Just built master and it still doesn't work, did it work for you? But things have changed: now it outputs -1 for the frame count for alea.mpg. Sending [auto 1( doesn't do anything at first, but after a couple seconds, it plays a few frames, then stops again.

Message: I just tested this again to be sure:
- Pd-extended 0.42.5 i386 32-bit on Mac OS X 10.6.8/Intel: When I load alea.mpg, it outputs 0 from the total frames outlet but sending [auto 1( it plays fine.
- Pd-extended 0.43.1-20120419 i386 32-bit on Mac OS X 10.6.8/Intel: When I load alea.mpg, it outputs 1 from the total frames outlet but sending [auto 1( does not play it.
Trying to build Gem from master now, I'll report back on that.

Message: Just did a little more testing. alea.mpg and 64849285.mp4 both play fine in Quicktime and in Pd-extended 0.42.5. It is only Pd-extended 0.43.1 with Gem 0.93 that has this issue

Message: I just tested this using Pd-0.43.1-extended-20120423-ubuntu-oneiric-i386.deb on Ubuntu Oneiric/i386 on my MacBook Pro 3,1 with a nVidia Corporation G84 [GeForce 8600M GT] . It seems to work fine with alea.mpg, /64849285.mp4, and others all work fine. Seems like its an OSX issue.

Message: yes, both play fine. alea.mpg is the same old video that has been included in Gem forever

Message: The video works fine on my config. Last Gem from git, Pd 0.43.2test1, ubuntu 11.10. Here i get : [pix_film]: loaded file: /home/jack/Vidéos/filmsPourTests/64849285.mp4 with 359 frames (640x480) at 30.000000 fps So the problem seems to be related to MasOSX only. ++

Message: I am also seeing the same behavior using a mp4 from the internet: [pix_film]: loaded file: /Users/hans/64849285.mp4 with 1 frames (640x480) at 1.000000 fps
This is the video, you can download the .mp4 from the download section of the page: http://vimeo.com/28911883
