Doesn't imagemagick do the same things as libcairo?
http://www.imagemagick.org/script/magick-vector-graphics.php
although svg/pdf/ do not load in pix_image using imageMAGICK backend correct?

afaik, there is a ImageMagick can be compiled with cairo support.

no, pix_image with imageMAGICK can load pdfs (though it takes a while to render them)

well yeah. It doea look like cairo is a build dep for imagemagick....
although i do get a "[pix_image]: failed to load image '/Users/megrimm/ID242.pdf'" when trying to load a PDF....
same thing for an .svg

well, probably there is something wrong with your ImageMagick installation.
a quick test would be to run IM's convert utility on a pdf, and see whether it can handle it: $ convert /Users/megrimm/ID242.pdf /tmp/ID242.png

And it seems to load .svg too (on my configuration). ++

and just for clarification: "render" here means the rasterization process if ImageMagick that converts a vector graphic into a rasterized image. the raster-image is then displayed (aka "rendered", but that was not the meaing i intended) using Gem, which should be fast enough.
this also shows some obvious disadvantage of the current method: a vector graphic (pdf) is converted to a rasterized image (imagemagick) which will then be displayed in a vector oriented scene (Gem) only to be rasterized for the final output (screen). a better approach would be to have vector graphics be imported as vector graphics (ala "model")

$ convert /Users/megrimm/ID242.pdf /tmp/ID242.png
yes this works fine.
also, as a side note, SVG does load but $fink install imagemagick-svg is needed first
vector graphic (pdf) is converted to a rasterized image (imagemagick) which will then be displayed in a vector oriented scene (Gem) only to be rasterized for the final output (screen).
to clarify this is:
vector->rasterized->vector->rasterized
thats quite the process!
a better approach would be to have vector graphics be imported as vector graphics (ala "model")
agreed. what would this look like? a separate plugin i assume? like modelSVG or modelPDF?
