When running the recent Pd-0.39.2-extended rc builds and the Pd-0.40.3-extended builds, people (including me) are getting this error, and Gem doesn't work:
/usr/local/lib/pd/extra/Gem.pd_linux: /usr/local/lib/pd/extra/Gem.pd_linux: undefined symbol: glUniform2i Gem: can't load library
Currently, the solution that people have been doing is using very old binaries. It would be nice if we could include a working Gem in this upcoming Pd-0.39.2-extended release. AFAIK, the nightly builds are using the latest code from CVS.
I am running Ubuntu Studio 7.04 Feisty.

Other solutions AFAIR are in the list archives: You need to compile Gem with a lower GL version.

is this only on ati-cards? i have an ati and i need to use the flag '--with-glversion=1.5' for gem-configure, whereas i know someone with an nvidia-card, who doesn't need that option.

It's also for Intel and Matrox cards. Additionally Pd will crash, if you close the Gem-window there, and some Mesa-DRI versions additionally don't show anything at all in the Gem-window. This started with the previous Mesa-developer version, I think 6.5.2. I didn't dare to confirm this with the newest 7.0 stable Mesa-DRI yet and won't do so at least until I've successfully finished my performance with the older Mesa at pd~conv. (These persisting problems make me consider to switch to something like Python-GL anyway.)

Hmm, ok, I can try that. I was searching the archives, but didn't find any recommended solution. What would be the disadvantage of that? I found this thread:
http://lists.puredata.info/pipermail/gem-dev/2007-06/002795.html
The auto-build machines are using mesa, and don't have extra libGLs installed, like in the above thread. It looks like

So it seems that mesa on Ubuntu/Feisty has glUniform2i, but on my MacBook Pro, I have to install fglrx, which then does not have glUniform2i. Then I also get problems with glDeleteProgram:
-------------------------------------------------------
hans@palatschinken:~ > dlocate libGL. libgl1-mesa-glx: /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2 libgl1-mesa-glx: /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 xorg-driver-fglrx: /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2 xorg-driver-fglrx: /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
/usr/local/lib/pd/extra/Gem.pd_linux: /usr/local/lib/pd/extra/ Gem.pd_linux: undefined symbol: glDeleteProgram
-------------------------------------------------------
So it seems that pinning the GL version to 1.5 is the best option for this release. I would be nice to include 2.0/shader support in Pd-extended that works across many installs.

iirc, all glsl specific stuff won't be available then, though i don't know what 'glsl specific stuff' and thus have no idea, what it really means. i just remember, that before using '--with-glversion=1.5' i just deleted all files, that matched the pattern 'glsl*.cpp' in order to avoid the same error.
