I think Gem only supports 8bit images. Could it possible to add support for 16bit images ?

Some cameras send 16bit data stream (kinect, but also most of industrial camera have a 16bit mode). It could be more convinient to use those data as is without the need to parse LSB and MSB into 2 channels. This can also improve performance.
