There is an outstanding bug where many videos don't play with Gem. Right now, this bug in Gem is the only thing holding back the final release of Pd-extended 0.43.1.
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=3517368&group_id=643...
Is there a fix for it that I can include in the Gem version included in Pd-extended 0.43.1 (the most recent Gem release).

Quicktime always reports MPEG-1 as a single frame movie, so that's unlikely to change. Are videos other than MPEG-1 not playing?

I am almost positive that alea.mpg used to play fine in Gem/OSX before the current version, so regardless of the frame count, it should be able to play alea.mpg and not just make weird fractals. ;)

it doesn't make "weird fractals". or rather, the "weird fractals" are produced by [pix_convolve] and QuickTime being unable to tell whether a "new" image is displayed.
anyhow, [1] has seen an update early august, and nobody has yet reviewed whether the changes fixed the issue.
to repeat myself: <quote> i think that i was able to fix this OSX-omly bug in the master-branch of Gem. it would be great if people could test whether it now works as expected (and does not introduce new bugs).
if it does work, i will backport it to 0.93 and eventually make a 0.93.4 release (that can be included with PdX-0.43) </quote>

I'll try to recompile Gem and test during the day on OSX 10.6.8 best, n

Opening examples/04.pix/05.film.pd btw i have 05.film and 05.movie here. the number of frames of the file alea.mpg is now detected as -1 and the output of the middle outlet is -1 320 240 30. Here is my terminal log (Pd-x-0.42.5 / OSX 10.6.8 / Gem recompile today) I can recompile this morning if you need more tests, best n

"-1" is the correct output if Gem cannot find out the number of frames when opening.
if it ever did output "0" (which i'm sure it did), this was certainly a bug.

Ok, that makes sense. So the last remaining piece is the regression that is preventing Gem from playing alea.mpg when sent a [auto 1( message.
