i'm not sure what you mean: the changelog.Debian says, that 2.1.3-rc5 is in use since june 2008. since loads of builds (including mine and PdX on debian) eventually depend on that, 2.1.3-rc5 has been tested for ages and no problems have been reported.
personally i'm still using an old version of ftgl for osx-binaries, as i happen to have a universal binary for this version (whichever that is). same goes for w32. the reason is mainly to not have go through the trouble of re-compiling ftgl/freetype for these platforms.
