hello,
related to this topic: I am also looking into buying a laptop for a project I am doing. I made a port of (a revised) [pix_drum] to openframeworks, then use OSC to send info to Pd. Pd will generate sound based on the info it receives.
I am wondering: is there a big difference for this and similar tasks between i5 and i7 processors? It's a big price difference, and if results for graphics and sound tasks are the same I will prefer i5...
Also, how are things going with using Nvidia graphics? Using 3D will not be necessary at this moment in this project, but I may wish to do so in the future. Since I look into buying something like Asus X53SV, it is relevant.
Bye, menno

hello,
i'm using an ATI on ubuntu for a project.
It's mainly working (good screen configuration, shaders are ok, etc). the only problems are :
- error on pd log at every frame.
- crash when destroying the gem windows...
so, ATI will certainly be a good option in the future.
For now, a solution to control optimus on linux look to work for some computer, but it's still is very young. Nvidia still provide driver for there card.
Having to install a kernel that is released after the hardware to use is not really a surprised, imo.

I'm a little confused about the problem. I can live without Optimus technology but if future Nvidia cards that support Optimus don't offer a decent driver with 3D accel that's a different problem. What exactly is the situation? Are the ATI Linux proprietary drivers still not a reasonable alternative?

Hello,
I bought a Asus N53SN recently, no way to activate/desactivate graphics cards in the BIOS till now (BIOS 206), whereas it seems to be possible on thinkpad laptops first install of bumblebee from ppa didn't worked for me, I didn't took the time yet to make it work, hope it will I had to install a recent kernel (2.6.35) on ubuntu 10.04 to have at least full resolution on the intel graphic card

Hello,
I would like to know if people on this list use a NVidia graphic card with Optimus on Linux and Gem and tell us if they encounter problems ? I would like to buy a new laptop but i read in different forum that NVidia doesn't plan to develop a driver on Linux using this technology. I also read that this technology with i5 Sandy Bridge and NVidia GT 540 might suffer of throttling (that could be a big issue in a peformance using Pd and Gem). I am looking for a good laptop to use Gem with a weight< 2.2 kg. Thanx. ++
