and just for clarification: "render" here means the rasterization process if ImageMagick that converts a vector graphic into a rasterized image. the raster-image is then displayed (aka "rendered", but that was not the meaing i intended) using Gem, which should be fast enough.
this also shows some obvious disadvantage of the current method: a vector graphic (pdf) is converted to a rasterized image (imagemagick) which will then be displayed in a vector oriented scene (Gem) only to be rasterized for the final output (screen). a better approach would be to have vector graphics be imported as vector graphics (ala "model")
