IMO the GEM configure script and makefiles need a general overhaul. At least the defaults should match the system and not require having to disable half of the options for a default build on a specific platform, ie. macOS.
As for autotools, yes, install automate, autoconf, libtool, etc form home-brew and generate the configure script, as with building Pd itself.

hey max,
you check the wiki tutorial?
https://github.com/umlaeute/Gem/wiki/How-to-build-Gem-on-macOS-Sierra-%2810.... https://github.com/umlaeute/Gem/wiki/How-to-build-Gem-on-macOS-Sierra-%2810.12%29
I'm getting a bit rusty on the OSX quirks.
hence the tutorial :)
if there is an easier way we should do a tutorial update but afaik homebrew is required (preferred) for installing automake, libtool, etc
