64-bit Gem on Mac OS X could drop Quicktime/Carbon in favor of gstreamer and/or gmerlin which I believe is already implemented on GNU/ Linux. Then its just window management, which doesn't seem so huge, but I haven't done it before.
Am I right in assuming that Gem could really benefit by 64-bit because it would allow it to use more than 4 gigs of RAM?

There is no 64 bit Carbon support at all. Apple killed it years ago.
All of the window management and Quicktime code is Carbon. The rewrite for Cocoa and 64 bit would be hundreds if not thousands of hours of work.

There seems to be some 64-bit support for Carbon, considering the Carbon framework is shipped as 64-bit in 10.5. I know that Carbon is basically deprecated, but IIRC, some parts of it are 64-bit. Which parts rely on Carbon?

GEM uses Carbon which is not 64 bit. Most apps (Photoshop, ProTools, etc) on OSX have no path to 64 bit without a nearly complete rewrite.

It never will be 64 bit on OSX.

For this upcoming Pd-extended 0.42 release, we should start releasing 64-bit builds. Is Gem in 64-bit ready for prime time?
