i tried to compile/run Gem on a 64bit debian installation, and indeed it crashes!
i think the problem is the CPU capabilities detection code (which tries to determine whether your CPU is capable of running e.g. SSE2 code)
given that any x86_64 CPU on the market supports SSE2 (and SSE and MMX), i disabled that check on this architecture for now.
at least, this fixed the problem here.
