Message:
i think i found the culprit
in src/Utils/PetesPlugins.h there is a "typedef unsigned long U32", which
is definitely wrong on LP64 architectures (e.g. linux/64bit)
i replaced that to use "int32_t", which should fix this bug.

Message:
i can now reproduce the bug on 64bit debian/squeeze
unfortunately, it seems to be unrelated to the "memory problem thread"
pointed to in my other comment.
instead, all ports of Pete's Plugins seem to be affected, here's the list
(i haven't tested all of them, though)
- pix_backlight
- pix_colorreduce
- pix_halftone
- pix_kaleidoscope
- pix_levels
- pix_lumaoffset
- pix_metaimage

Summary: GEM image loading - failure if Quicktime absent
Initial Comment:
When loading a jpg, if gem_imageQT.dll is present in the GEM directory, but Quicktime has not been installed on the system and eventhough gem_imageJPEG.dll is present in the GEM directory as well, the jpg fails to load.
Removing gem_imageQT.dll allows the image to load correctly with gem_imageJPEG.dll.
GEM ver: 0.93.1 - compiled: Aug 28 2011
OS: Windows 7 64bit - 32bit application
Pd ext 0.42.5 - GEM installed the the zip archive

Summary: pix_film/pix_image fail to create on w32 if plugins fail
Initial Comment:
this is with Gem-0.93.1 on win7 (from the installer)
QuickTime is NOT installed
creating a [pix_image data/bla.jpg] fails to create:
- plugins installed: all but imageMAGICK (which crashes)
- i think that imageQT throws an error which is caught only by the object creator (which fails creation)
creating [pix_film] fails as well (because QuickTime is not installed)
- plugins installed: default

i can now reproduce the bug on 64bit debian/squeeze
unfortunately, it seems to be unrelated to the "memory problem thread"
pointed to in my other comment.
instead, all ports of Pete's Plugins seem to be affected, here's the list
(i haven't tested all of them, though)
- pix_backlight
- pix_colorreduce
- pix_halftone
- pix_kaleidoscope
- pix_levels
- pix_lumaoffset
- pix_metaimage

unable to reproduce (on debian wheezy/sid with mesa)
can this be related to the image not being found?
does it work if you add the path to the Gem binary manually
e.g.
$ cd .../Gem
$ pd -lib ./Gem -path . help/pix_kaleidoscope.pd
