Message:
using a buffersize that is a multiple of the blocksize solve the probleme.
if the buffersize is not multiple of the blocksize, you can have things
like in the attached image.
(it should be a perfect spiral).

Comment By: IOhannes m zmlnig (zmoelnig)

Message:
i'm not sure whether this is really a bug: the buffersize you are
specifying in your patch (96000) is not a multiple of the blocksize (4096);
try a multiple (e.g. 98304) and see whether this helps.
please also provide a screenshot of what you expect and what you get.

Initial Comment:
currently Gem can be tuned via environmental variables.
it might be nicer to use a preference-system, a la Pd:
- linux: ~/.pd/Gem
- osx, w32: registry/pref-file

Summary: create a plugin-system for external libraries
Initial Comment:
it would be nice if loader-functionality of movies and the like would be implemented as "plugins" which are loaded at the start of Gem (and possibly re-loaded!)
this should make distribution much easier (esp. on linux systems, where a lot of external libraries are used and all distros handle them differently)

Summary: pix_video to look for all driver for each device
Initial Comment:
opening /dev/video0 may fail if it is a v4l device and gem look for a v4l2 device. even if Gem is able to open a v4l device.
i think when sending a [open ...< message Gem should try to open this device with all available driver (V4L,V4L2,DV).
this would allow patch to work on diferent computer without changing the patch.
i think no one should care the drivers used by a webcam, so Gem should not ask...

Summary: support for GiGE cams
Initial Comment:
support for cameras using the "GigE Vision" (video over gigabit ethernet)
unfortunately it seems like there is no standardized (and free) implementation of GigE Vision.
prosilica offers at least an SDK (for all platforms): http://www.prosilica.com/products/gige_sdk.html

Comment By: IOhannes m zmlnig (zmoelnig)
Date: 2010-06-23 16:53
Message:
the problem with GiGE, is of course that the standard is not open, so
people cannot a) build devices according to the GiGE standard and b) build
APIs supporting the GiGE standard if they are not part of the AIA
committee.[1]
however, there is a commercial API available from MVtec called "HALCON"
[2], that should be able to grab GiGE-cameras (and other cool stuff).
you can purchase their framework for $$$ (or get a free (as in beer)
evaluation license (lasting only a short period of time)).
i have done the latter and implemented a videoHALCON backend for
[pix_video], which seems to work so far (at least on linux)
it comes with a README to get you going.

Summary: pix_video duplicate frames
Initial Comment:
at least on linux (v4l2), people keep reporting that they have problems with duplicate frames.
if the camera runs at a lower rate than the grabber, the same frame might be captured twice. there should be a feedback (e.g. the newimage-flag) to the userspace, if this happens

Message:
unable to reproduce, at least with the new plugin-based code: both v4l and
v4l2 backends should already provide feedback when no new frame could be
grabbed

Summary: lighting with cone and cylinder
Initial Comment:
hi, even if this is very unlikely, but is it possible that when turning on lighting with cone and cylinder the lighting vector is pointing to the wrong direction? at least it looks as if the light source is coming from the opposite side (compared to other geos like cube or sphere). I am using GEM: ver: 0.92.3, compiled: Mar 15 2010 on mac OSX

i think you are right.
the question is: should we just change it to be correct (e.g. will it
break anything)?

Summary: svn compile failure (gcc 4.5.0) - \'multiple definition\'
Initial Comment:
the compile of svn gem stops at pix_film/record/video with a \'multiple definition\' error in relation to `gem::PluginFactory<gem::film>::s_factory\'.
this error has been repeated by two other people using archlinux:

here my suggestion from April … think is still the same. or?
yes the RGBA channels are set wrong on mac osx. the cube appears blue
because the alpha channel is read as blue.
when you change channels like this
R –> G
G –> R
B –> A
A –> B
the movie will justified. but it´s not handy to give each record this
process so
i fixed this with a change in the code of recordQT.cpp in line 241 -
instead of colorspace = k32BGRAPixelFormat;
i use colorspace = k32ARGBPixelFormat;
but i don´t know how this affects other os
also the recorded mov is upside down - this can fix in quicktime pro with
a click in the properties of the video track -
so i don´t looked for the code issue.

please refer to the thread “strange colors with pix_record” on the
list.
codec was defaulting to “video” but that doesn't seem to have
influence on it.
didn't try it with pixes but doubt that would make a difference.
and yes - changing the colorspace with pix_yuv is a workaround, it works
then.

which codec are you using?
does it work when just recording a pix (as aquired by pix_film)
does it work if you manually change the colorspace, e.g. with [pix_yuv]
resp. [pix_rgba]
