Bugs item #1190023, was opened at 2005-04-26 02:37 Message generated for change (Tracker Item Submitted) made by Item Submitter You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=478070&aid=1190023...
Category: puredata Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Hans-Christoph Steiner (eighthave) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: [select] doesn't always work with symbol selector
Initial Comment: a [select] without a creation argument cannot use a symbol selector. A float will work fine on the right inlet, but a symbol will not.
Also, a [select] with a symbol argument won't take a float on the right inlet, and vice-versa.

hi HC,
this is a feature (a ``statically typed'' thing). Select with no argument is a shortcut for [select 0].

So maybe my request should be a feature request rather than a bug.
Static typing is available via [select 0] and [select word]. It would be very handy to have [select] do dynamic typing.
I have worked on a couple programs (serendiPd and atorat, for example) that require generic message handling in a big way. The shortcuts like this [select] one, and the undefined nature of mixed sets of atoms that start with a symbol, but aren't cast as lists, make generic message handling quite difficult.
