So each CVS repository has a config file called CVSROOT/cvsignore. In there you can put file patterns that CVS should ignore (i.e. you won't get a "? zexy.pd_darwin" line when doing a "cvs update"). Things like *.o and *~ are automatically included.
I would like to add *.pd_linux and *.pd_darwin to this list as well. If people think this would be generally useful and not cause problems, I'll commit it to the SourceForge repository, otherwise, I'll set it locally (~/.cvsignore).

IMO this makes sense.

My latest checkout also pulled in some .sit archives ... Maybe they also can be added to the list.

I tested this list on my local machine, it works nicely. I'll commit it if there are no objections:
# Pd binaries *.pd_linux *.pd_darwin
# archive formats *.zip *.sit *.gz *.bz2 *.tar
# Mac OS X apps *.app
# autotools files autom4te.cache config.log config.status

I'd take .app's out of there since they are not files but actually directories?! I don't know what cvs would do with a directory that has a file extension that says it should not modify it?
All else looks great. maybe add .dll for windows libs?

It will ignore the directory, that's the point of this list. In order to include any of Mac OS X's directory formats like .app, .framework, . bundle, .kn, etc. you need to use the cvswrap/cvsunwrap hack, which is probably best avoided. That reminds me, I'll add these to the list:
.dmg .framework .bundle .DS_Store
All else looks great. maybe add .dll for windows libs?
Someone might need to include a precompiled lib for some reason. pd_darwin and pd_linux are Pd-specific, .dll is not. But the Windows people should answer this definitively, it doesn't really matter to me either way.
