I have started putting releases in the files section of the SourceForge site, you can check it out here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=55736
So now I want to download links on the main site, http://pure-data.sf.net. Anyone have an objections?

generally no, only about pd-gem, pd-gem is a separate sf project, guess you talked with Johannes about doing a release ?
Apart from that, you can change the webpages in the htdocs directory, check the new webpages in with the upload script.
When I have time I would like to reorganize the page into several pages, section for users, developers (how to contribute etc..) download section, menu on the left side.
Introduction Download Documentation Developers Contact
For the time being we could distribute the existing sections, the "Projects at the Pure Data Repository" will be in the Documentation section, the CVS stuff in the Developers Section aso.
Later we might have to cook up a more general introduction ...
If there is someone who is willing to reorganize this, would be great.

I think, this is a good division.

I'm willing to do it, but I won't have time this weekend because of the LAD meeting. I'd like to keep the design of the pages simple, W3C-conform and layouted with stylesheets, i.e. no <font>-tricks and no <table> where not necessary, i.e. a design, with CSS-compliant browsers in mind, that is readable on older browsers as well. Why do that? Because it keeps things simple from a collaborational point of view. Everyone can then code in simple HTML using standard tags like <h1> or <p> and it still looks good and consistent.
The changes will require a navigational bar. Maybe I can put something together in short time modeled after the w3.org pages.
ciao

Would be cool, I am all in favour of keeping it simple, we are not in an immediate hurry I think, so you can take your time and prepare everything for the LAD meeting.
Meanwhile Hans can add the links in the index.html, and we split it later.

I stealed around and built this:
http://footils.org/pkg/newlayout.html
The respective pd.css already is in CVS.

Are you sure, the one I just got is a bit different ? Anyhow, I am going to upload a splited version, Hans then can fill the download.html file.

If it has lines starting with #Menu and #Content in it, it should be fine. The html-pages only need a minor change: removing of all table stuff (table, tr, td) and <div id="Menu"></div> and <div id="Content"> tags surrounding the respective areas.
ciao
I started out just making the pages fully standards compliant, but I got a little carried away, so I made a couple of other changes which I hope everyone likes. If not we can always role back to previous versions, thanks to the glory of CVS.
1. I broke of the menu, quote, and webring into 'include' files so they exist in only one file. I also added a 'Last Modified' tag at the bottom of the pages. These are included using PHP:
<?php include('menu.inc'); ?>
I am no PHP star, so that's all the PHP I used, to keep it understandable without having to learn PHP. But this does require changing the file endings from .html to .php. And the big bummer, setting up your emacs modes to work properly.
2. I created a Mailing Lists page
3. I added two links on the sidebar: Mailing Lists and Project Page
4. Its fully validated as HTML 4.01 Transitional (http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fpure- data.sourceforge.net%2F&doctype=%28detect+automatically%29&charset=iso- 8859-1+%28Western+Europe%29)
I didn't check my email until just now, so I did realize there was this whole thread until now...

I just had another thought about the site: instead of the Mailing Lists page, I think it might be better to have a 'Support' or 'Help' page, that would have links to many things and short desciptions of them, including pdb, mailing lists, pddp, Miller's online docs, etc.

The primary idea was that this would be handled by the pd webring. But you are right, we might put some selected links there, but who selects ?
Shouldn't we just put a link to pure-data.org ?
The idea of the CVS is not to be another portal to get information about pd, but a common place to download code and a way how to organize what gets developed for pd and how.

Well, the webring, being self-selecting, is a good place to start as a list of links.
However, this is extremely decentralised, and I think that it's "friendlier" to newbies to present some sort of front page.

This is true, but Pd really seems in need of a "front page", an introduction to what Pd is, how to get started, what's generally available, and where to go for more information. It doesn't have to be at CVS, but it is indeed a central place where a lot of us are putting our attention lately.

i'd be happy if more people would join the webring with their sites. (http://pd.klingt.org/webring/howto.html for info)
However, this is extremely decentralised, and I think that it's "friendlier" to newbies to present some sort of front page.
there's quite a lot of "front pages". the problem is, which one you should select to start at ;)
seriously: i think the only clean solution to this topic would be if the main developers agree on a common web platform. as long as miller,iem,jfm3 and others have different sites for pd, searchtools like the webring will be the lowest common denominator.

I'm not sure, if pure-data.sf.net should be such a front page. We should of course put up more docs, but currently I would prefer it that was limited to the stuff, that's already in the CVS. Well, there also is Pd itself...
Maybe adding links to the developers' websites would be cool.

I am very open to letting other people help with pure-data.org, since I can do little more than pay the hosting bills for it myself.
I don't mind giving up the domain name to someone with more energy either.

Yes, thats the main reason I do not want to make the CVS a general PD portal. I think all of us only have limited time, so the most reasonable thing is to work together, so we can make the best of it.
Theoretically, if someone wants to change/add to pure-data.org, what can he do ?

Yes, it is working well for that purpose, but if someone wants to get information about PD, it is probably not the best starting place.
I think that this is what hc was suggesting.
But maybe it would be better to put this general pd hub on pure-data.org.
At least pure-data.org should be part of the pd webring. Maybe dieb13 can post a message there about the existence of the web ring ?

I am trying to think how to incorporate such content into pure-data.org. My first thought was a 'Getting Started' section, with info about downloads, mailing lists, webring, etc. But its hard to fit in static content with a blog.
pure-data.sf.net is a natural starting place, since its becoming the main download site for pd, but there are too many different sites for pd, it would be great to merge some of them.
