This post reminded me to ask: who is working on the windows version of GEM? I see Daniel Heckenberg's name list as a developer, and seem to recall he was writing some windows stuff as well. I would like to run it on a win2k box here but still need a compiler. Guenter mentioned making a gcc version for windows, should that be something rolled into CVS if it works?

Sorry if this is a newbie question, but i'm still giving my first steps with PD.
Is it possible show video input directly from a WebCam or a Digital Camcorder in PD for Windows? I have a work to do in my university and it would be extremely cool if i could mix images, text and live video from a webcam or a digital camcorder. Is it possible to do it in PD? And if so, what package/library do i need to achieve this?
Also, please notice that i use Windows XP, not Linux (wich i assume the majority of you use).

well, normally i do development under linux and then make it run under windows too (most things i do are not very linux-specific)

yes, he has definitely more knowledge about windows-specific stuff than i do...

i could compile it for you (so maybe produce binaries out of the cvs and put it somewhere on our iem-site)
making a gcc version for windows, should that be something rolled into CVS if it works?
yes, surely

compiling pd with gcc on windows is possible, there are some issues to be resolved. Making Gem compilable with gcc will be a major task, because you have to deal with all the libraries Gem depends on. So it is not going to happen soon.

Yup - I have rewritten pix_video for windows a couple of times, one version using VFW and the other using DirectShow (which unfortunately requires a recent version of the DirectX SDK to compile).
I should definitely contribute this to CVS.
It will take me a little while to get up to speed with the CVS version of GEM but I'll try to do that and get a windows compiled version out for those users who've been requesting it.
Perhaps I should also build some free-standing externals for video input under windows that can work with the binary GEM-0.87 release?

That would be great! Cheers!
