The new icon is growing on me, mainly in that it clearly scales better.
I think what is bothering me about it is mainly that the proportions see a bit off when compared to both other macOS icons and the existing vanilla and extended icons.
My 2 cents:
* the new one is too wide and thin, doesn't quite fit into the overall square profile of the macOS icons * I don't think it needs the tilde * the bang button is too small * the line weight on the edges is too thin and gets lost on small zoom lenses as compared to the other icons * the horz center gradient is still a little much, maybe the more blurred gradient on the extended icon works better? * I'm assuming the font use is Deja Sans Mono?
I think it just needs some tweaks to find a more middle ground with the vanilla and extended icon.

Whichever you go with, here's a script for converting PNG files into retina *.icns: https://gist.github.com/rnkn/d29fcfbf1c46f9c1465468b8965175b6 https://gist.github.com/rnkn/d29fcfbf1c46f9c1465468b8965175b6
Input needs to be PNG 1024 x 1024.

I have a copy of Pd extended (I think pretty much the latest one) squirreled away - I just stuck a copy of their icons here:

I can't judge what makes a good mac icon (anything on a mac screen is ugly to me :)

Seems like this script is Mac OS only, so I was using this online tool: https://iconverticons.com/online/
I kinda hate the new icon and I don't think any new icon should be taken without more people taking a look at it and sharing their two cents. I have the same problems with it or agree with the rest, to highlight a few.

+1
- I don't think it needs the tilde
+1 - I think it should NOT have a tilde, that's a major change, and it's fine without it.
I think it just needs some tweaks to find a more middle ground with the
vanilla and extended icon.
Extended and Vanilla are basically the same, right? And the extended one has a better quality, how about just adapting from the extended icon with minor changes? This is very drastic, jumps to my eye, and it's not getting better with time.
cheers
The extended icon is better quality but still lower on retina screens. I'd be up for using it if we could get the original vector graphics file for it and generate newer PNGs & ICNS files.

Yes, I think so. We didn't really get too far with the feedback before the PR was merged.

In my view the extended icon is terrible, to the point where I couldn't use Pd without replacing the icon, so a comparison where someone would prefer it over the retina icon baffles me. I can understand people having opinions about a particular aesthetic, but requests to make the retina design look more like the extended translate to me as "make it look worse." So I'll bow out of this one.

A useful clarification. Does anyone have an opinion as to the design of the vanilla vs. the extended icons/ Seems like the thing to do is choose one or the other set, but then re-paint them in 1024x1024.

THat's what I'm thinking. I emailed Hans about the vector graphics source file for the extended icon.

Hi Dan, I quickly made one addressing some of your points. This uses the current Pd font, not Courier and it uses the plain colors. It has the shadow on a separate layer. Feel free whatever you like with it. Made with IOannes SVG export plugin...

Tiny bit better. (blur on layer, not elements, which gives a better result) open with inkscape and export there the required resolution.

Additionally to the svg I sent in this thread, there is this illustrator file which has some vector content: https://github.com/tgck/pdtshirt/blob/master/data/pd_t_shirt.ai
