(quoting G.Geiger from message on pd-list)
The way to go is definitely ALSA, or better jack (jackit.sourceforge.net). The jack audio server allows several applications to share the sound device, it is supposed to be low latency and it is callback based. (and has a simpler API, only floating point format, non-interleaved samples, which all fits pd very well).
I wholeheartedly second the idea to make pd a jack client. That would be great!
Well, I hope we can manage to show pd at its best within this distribution, with all externals, docs, examples, etc etc that all people are contributing here ...
I really think that PD and all its bits need to get into CVS... I'm afraid that not using CVS might really be hurting development and collaboration, considering the size of the community.

hi,
I have mixed feelings -- let us not compromise the stability, and the benefits of a pure, simple, and unified design. These are Pd strengths, and I think they are quite important for a performance tool (while perhaps not that important for a studio tool).
But otoh, I think there ought to be a possibility of a development model, probably based on cvs, which would not take away any of the powers Miller should have, and would spare him of any extra burdens...?
For the time being -- anyone with an idea of a bug tracking mechanism?

Hi,
I'm starting to feel pro-CVS also. For starters it could be for externals only.
Currently the two 'central' places to look for externals are, as far as I know,
The Pure Data Base, http://pd.iem.at/pdb http://www.pure-data.org
The idea here is to try to link to every external out there.
However, just using google is often easier, faster and will result in finding externals not listed in these places.
So, things are scattered. Having a repository to actually host the externals would at least make it possible to avoid it, to centralize.

Yes, that would be a dream come true. The important thing is to have a critcal mass of developers that want to participate at the beginning.
The last time we were discussing that I proposed to setup CVS here, but running into questions about security ATL, I think we should start a sourceforge project.
For pd itself I have the same concern as Krzysztof has, although I think we could setup a "development branch" look how it works out, how broken it gets etc and for the beginning making merges from that into the main pd branch from time to time only...

Hello,
PD and IEM !
Since we are just setting up a new doku system for the IEM an as part the pd projects on the IEM and all project in relation to this, we can propose/offer following services for the pd community
cvs.pd.iem.at ?
... or cvs.iem.at and modules pd-xxx ...
The main site is based on the free content management system Zope (see http://zope.org) on which we set up a CMF (Content management framework) site where people can freely updload edit, comment, etc. , handle the mailing list (also in python) and doing documentation (having ther web (Zope) Space), using the pd-external database and so on and having a cvs interface for the cvs server.
But, because a docu-site is as good as the management of this, there is the need of installing a workflow, which is adjusted on the pd community. This means everybody can take part of a common documentation with comments, project and cvs space and also individual Spaces with links and so on, but some(one or preferrable more)poeple have to do the review and publish button press work so the everything stays trackable and organized for the main tree (individual spaces can be organized like they want).
The administration of the site could be done by our sysops (at the time Hannes Zmoelnig and me). The reviewing, coordinating and management has to be done by some trusted developer/user, so partly we can do some of this but not all.
Everyone can set up his private project space (as a site or a link) and/or can handle a tree in the project/documentation and developpment tree.
Since the site is fully configurable doing sectioning and delegation, there can be different parts with different reviewers and so on.... .. also everybody can implemnt a skin (design) and poeple/groups can open projects etc which should be related to pd or electronic music.
So we need poeple who volunteer for this jobs, a discussion about the workflow and threads... and or if really is needed.
Start could be soon (since zope is running ...), when semester ends (end of june), we have more time also for the pd stuff.
One point of all especially for external developers could be that the site could be synched: cvs with docu and with the external database and a kind of external name-registration for libraries could be done to prevent name clashes and so on.
Anyway we need this on IEM for our libraries...

I'll try to list some things such repository would make possible:
- find and obtain externals easily
- externals in the repository are considered more "official" than the code lurking around
- get the latest externals and/or versions automagically
- automated building and packaging of externals
(in some cases, I'd like to get a package that has all the major libraries and externals, prebuilt)
- ... ?
The major advantage of course is a versioning system, merging of many peoples' changes, etc.

Just to clarify: the idea with pure-data.org is (among other things) to provide a place where anyone can post a URL for anyone's object or object library. I post links to whatever I find on the mailing list, for example. All of these objects and object libraries are moving targets. pure-data.org relies on it's users to post new links and to mark certain downloads as in need of change.
That being said, if external writers would follow some convention in how they package their object's source, we could easily make a collection that could be maintained across different versions of Pd, and on different platforms. This is known as the "herding cats" problem, and I have only ever seen it solved by a "benevolent dictator" strategy. Good luck!
Hi there,
I got positive response from the sourceforge team that they will host to project.
Here are the next steps to be taken:
The cvs server is cvs.pure-data.sourceforge.net
jfm3, did you find out about the possibility to let cvs.pure-data.org point to that ?
The CVSROOT for developer access is:
:ext:<developername>@cvs.pure-data.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/pure-data
In order to get write access to the repository, developers should register a user at sourceforge.net, and send me a message with the username in order to add them to the project.
Registering Documentation:
https://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=11123&group_id=1
Those who have "finished" externals lying around, things that they don't update too frequently, or generally just don't want to deal with registering, cvs ATL, can drop me a message with the URL where to download and I can put it into CVS.
Well, all for this now, further messages about how it will be organized later, ....
Greetings,
Guenter

if jfm3 has no success with his provider, we could still use cvs.pd.iem.at (despite of my not setting up a cvs-server here at iem, but it is really a matter of time right now) it should be up and running now (but could be removed again on request to keep confusion low)

Hi all,
After discovering that the midiclkin and midirealtimein objects do not work properly under 34.4 or 35.test26, I had a look through the code and discovered that it only requires a couple of small changes to get it going and perhaps some #ifdefs to make it behave on the other platforms.
It seems strange: all of the code is there except the correct dispatch call... perhaps there's a reason for this?
changes are: s_unix.c around line 300 (ver 0.35test26) in function sys_dispatchnextmidiin
... if (byte == 0xf8) { inmidi_clk(midi_inqueue[midi_intail].q_time); } else if (byte > 0xf8) { inmidi_realtimein(portno, byte); } ...
oh, and the second atom needs to be included in the pd_list call in the realtimein object:
x_midi.c around line 645:
void inmidi_realtimein(int portno, int SysMsg) { if (midirealtimein_sym->s_thing) { t_atom at[2]; SETFLOAT(at, portno); SETFLOAT(at+1, SysMsg); pd_list(midirealtimein_sym->s_thing, &s_list, 2, at); <--- change is here } }

I can redirect http://cvs.pure-data.org or http://sourceforge.pure-data.org to point to http://pure-data.sourceforge.net, but I'm not so sure I can get them to put what I want in DNS. Also, are we sure sourceforge won't change the IP of their CVS server?

hmm, does the domain holder only allow one host ? We bought the demudi and agnula stuff at mydomain, and they allow for unlimited ip pointing.
Anyhow, I think it would be the best thing to have a neutral name, therefore cvs.pure-data.org would just fit best. Its about pure-data, thats it.
Of course from my point of view, it would be better to have pd.demudi.org pd.agnula.org, etc etc, but I think it is not good to put this under some institutional hat, ..
About the IP of the sourceforge server, I am not sure if they change often, of course it is a pain if you have to ask your provider to change the pointing, thats an advantage of the mydomain (probably exchange that with any other domain name service), you can add/change all the things via a web interface.
All of this should make it easier to move the CVS later if needed (e.g the licensing issues I mentioned).
SO if we can't have cvs.pure-data.org, I would leave it at the sourceforge address. Probably the easiest way to go for now.
