It seems that makefile.dependencies isn't need to build Pd, but I suppose it's there to make building work better for partial builds, i.e. when working on code.
It's also important for anyone that is just compiling Pd multiple times from a cvs checkout. If the dependencies are not present, then recompiling after a "cvs update" could result in a very broken build, which is A Bad Thing(tm). :)
