i have been using pd-39 from the cvs this week and for some reason i am experiencing click and crackles when the gui refreshes. when i delete or move an object, i get a harsh crackle through my sound card. this is even more present when i load a sound file into an array. i don't get this if i use the official 40. not sure if i should be posting this here or not but just wondering if it is a issue for anyone else?
also, what are developers working on the most at the moment. 38-dev 39-dev, 40, desire etc. what would be the most useful to be testing and what has the best functionality, opinions?. all but desire seem to have the annoying paranoid closing question whenever i want to close a patch. even unedited help files etc.
thanks

On any sound program with a user interface we are experiencing clicks and crackles when the GUI refreshes, this problem can be fortunately resolved with programs like pure data, with separating the server and the client. For avoiding to have an interface that freezes when the server is under a process that is taking too much ressources, we can run pure data to control another one. If the processes are so important that we can not run several intances of pd on the same computer, we can also control it from another computer. So, in fact, using pd just resolves the 'click and crackles when GUI refreshes' problem, AFAIU.

i don't experience this with any other audio program.

i have used this method before for using things like Gem and PDP an (netsend/OSC etc) which is 'sort of' justified but it seems a bit dumb to have to do it all the time. not disrespect to pd, but that would be a really tedious way to interface with pd all the time.
don't you think?

Lucky you. It's usually the graphical interface that is experiencing problems rather than the audio, also paywares don't use to allow users to be in a situation where audio is crackling when the GUI refreshes. It might be interesting to have something for preventing audio glitches? Have you got an example of audio programs with an interface written in tcl-tk where we don't experience clicks when GUI refreshes?

pd can be used like a command line tool, and be controlled with the interface of our choice. Then we have many other options like building an interface with another language than tcl-tk, like gtk+, wxpython, flash, SVG,(etc...,) but with the disadvantage of using more and more other modules, dependencies.

That really depends what you are trying to do. I have only used two forms of Puredata - Miller's canonical distribution, and DesireData.
DesireData I have only used twice, and both times I found it too slow to use, though that was more than likely my own fault. The default DD gui had way more features than Puredata. If you're into visually heavy and customizeable UIs then this is probably your kind of thing, I guess.
As a fan of minimalism in software I find that Miller's Pd is nicest for me. It has a minimal interface, and also a minimal codebase, minimal dependencies, etc. This is the main reason I don't use Pd-extended as well. It seems that things break more easily in big complicated pieces of software like Pd-extended. If you want wider compatability with lots of the patches out there on the net using various externals, then Pd-extended is awesome for you since it comes packaged with so many.
I have no idea about the various forms of puredevel etc. in CVS I have a feeling that some of them are dead/obsolete. Someone who hacks more on the Pd code than me can tell you.
Best,
Chris.
