hello list
I recently contacted Guenter via sourceforge to ask to be listed as a Pd project developer. Specifically I wish to update my "motex" externals on the CVS site which someone had kindly uploaded for me a few years ago.
Since my externals were already on the CVS, Guenter granted me developer access without running this past the pd-dev list. He suggested though that I let the list know what my plans are:
The first thing i'd like to do is include the "sqlsingle" external. This was previously omitted from motex but was available separately from my web site. In brief, sqlsingle allows the use of SQL messages to communicate and retrieve data from a postgreSQL dbase. Since it requires postgresql to be installed in order to compile, i'll create a separate compilation option in the makefile. The external has been tested on Linux only, but since I have postgresql installed on a Windows box (a big drama for me to do!) - I'll attempt to test it on Windows too.
For the CVS version of sqlsingle i'd like to change its name to "postgresqlpd" as I may decide to change the way various data types are formated in its output (currently some are sent to lists as floats for convenience and everything else as symbols). Binary data type handling won't be added. Additionally, I may (if it's easy to do) adapt the external for use with mysql databases. This would be called "mysqlpd".
Beyond that I hope to write two new externals in order to read and write to disk in the "speex" compression format (see www.speex.org). This format for those that don't know it is an open source codec similar to ogg vorbis but optimised for speech. I'll get back to the list about this project as there are some issues regarding downsampling that i'll need to resolve.
If anyone has any comments - please let me know!
cheers, iain
I imported the motex code into CVS back in the day. Its good to hear that you are maintaining it in CVS now. Welcome aboard.

hm ... i think it would make sense to combine the effort for writing a cross platform soundfile player for pd ... pd's sound file player is quite buggy and not really intuitive to use, there are iem's mp3 player, possibly an ogg player ... and readanysf, that iirc has some problems with the recent flext ...
maybe it's just another stupid idea, that will be discussed once and never realized (like the marketplace / bounty system), but what about a plugin api for pd? the readsf/writesf players could be improved (maybe similarly written to thomas's sfplay) and an api could be designed that makes it possible to support all kinds of audio formats ... mp3, ogg, flac, speex, libsndfile, whatever you want ... this api could also be used for the soundfiler ...
just a stupid idea to save some work ... but it will only work if several developers _cooperate_ which will be the mayor problem :-(
just my 2¢ ... tim
Hi all,
there are iem's mp3 player, possibly an ogg player ... and readanysf, that iirc has some problems with the recent flext ...
to my knowledge these problems should have vanished (by introduction of a trivial patch to readanysf~) in the meantime.

just one note: sfplay is only a two-day sketch of a player that is going to be embedded into xsample in the future. It is relying on libsndfile and is working really well for me... i haven't published it on the cvs because it's not really a project on its own. If there is any need for it i'll find a way to open-source it. Just let me know.
best greetings, Thomas

I am not sure if pd needs to play all these compressed formats. I never had problems converting the files in a proper, easy to read format like wav or aiff, saving tons of CPU time for more useful tasks.
I do agree that the pd builtin player is awkward to use and misses features like speed change, which makes it pretty useless for all but trivial playback.
maybe it's just another stupid idea, that will be discussed once and never realized (like the marketplace / bounty system),
We just couldn't agree on the bounty system. I was against it and in favour of forming a non-profit organization. I wouldn't step back from my opinion without seeing a proposal for a proper model of the bounty system. Obviously copying the Gnome bounty thing can't possibly work, and we do not even have the information about how they do it internally.
Who takes the decisions ? How can we assure that this will be fair ? Who decides what gets implemented, how ?
So this is the problem. Someone would have to really think about it, which means a lot of work, just as the formation of an organization, or just like the setup of the CVS. I wouldn't volunteer for such a task anymore, you are free to do so. Just get a critical amount of developers on your side and make sure the others don't run away completely.

Having a sound file player that plays any format makes Pd more flexible, leading to more new and unexpected uses. This is the strength of Pd: as few presumptions as possible. If you wanted to build a mp3 jukebox using Pd, for example, you'd need to play mp3s within Pd.

Not necessarilly. You could control an mp3 player from pd. Anyhow, just wanted to say that the format question is not the most important one regarding readsf~.

right ... it's easy to use jack to connect an mp3 player to pd, especially on windoze :-)

concerning usability, two steps that can be done in one step, is one step too much...
i think using pd should be mainly about using a software rather than finding workarounds for things pd can't do ... finding workarounds might be fun for a programmer, but for the artistic use of pd??? when making music, i'd like to have a software that works out of the box!

I am not against pd being able to play all file formats, I hope I made this clear. I said which of the two steps is more important for me and explained why. It may be that I was telling the obvious, sorry for being that superficial then. And about your two steps in one, make sure that you don't fall.

The key here before we can make any decisions at all, we need to come up with a method of making decisions. I think the Debian model makes a lot of sense: one developer, one vote. We could just adopt a lot of the Debian model directly, since its tried-n-true and well developed.

A non-profit organization takes A LOT of work to set up, I've been thru it, as well as money to pay lawyers. And that's just for a U.S. non-profit, an international NGO could easily be much more work to set up. I am not at all opposed to doing it, I just think it doesn't make much sense right now. I think the way to go would be first set up an organization, then eventually make it a legal entity. Plus there are many decisions that will need to be made when setting up the NGO, so first, we need a mechanism for making decisions.

Yes, I agree that it is quite complicated, but it is the most tried-n-true system for an official, codified developer democracy. Its not the only way, I am trying to get a discussion going on this topic because nothing else can happen along these lines until we come up with a system for making collective decisions that is fair.
Those criticisms are valid, does anyone have any alternate suggestions?

I don't know anything about the laws regarding Vereins. At the very least, if we are going to create such an organization, we are going to have to consult a lawyer to tell us what all of the ramifications are. Otherwise it could screw us in the end.

I think the hard part is to get the pd community to join in. The only way I can see this happen is that one is stepping forward and is making a real proposal. Then after some month or years people will join in (or not). Obviously the interest is not high enough yet.

Hi there,
I think voting democratically makes sense personally. One vote for each "developer" sounds logical.
What is a "developer" though? User input about certain things could be really useful, in terms of things like strategic direction.
Is a developer anyone who contributes to the PD core? Contributes by writing Externals? Contributes by writing abstractions? Contributes by writing documentation? Contributes by teaching workshops? Maybe just someone who is a source-forge developer for pd?
Am I a developer?

I think voting democratically makes sense personally. One vote for each "developer" sounds logical.
What is a "developer" though? User input about certain things could be really useful, in terms of things like strategic direction.
Is a developer anyone who contributes to the PD core? Contributes by writing Externals? Contributes by writing abstractions? Contributes by writing documentation? Contributes by teaching workshops? Maybe just someone who is a source-forge developer for pd?
Am I a developer?
I think that debian is a good example here: anyone who is elected to be a developer is a developer. The existing body of developers elects new ones. Maybe "developer" isn't the best term for it...

Hi,
Ok, what defined the "existing body of developers" in light of the below pointed questions?

Indeed developer seems not to be the best term. It sounds like the way a board of a non-profit body works. It *could* be a development board for PD. I think using the ideas of board goverence would make things somewhat smoother, and actually could in the future faciliate a legal non-profit since in a way we would manage it as one.
Where to start?
