Initial Comment: With Pd-extended 0.40.3 and Pd-0.41.4-extended-20090328 on Mac OS X/Intel. It did not crash with Pd-vanilla 0.41.4 and 0.42.4.

Message: found the source of the problem the new sys_isabsolutepath() code was confusing sys_open_absolute(). It turns out that Miller fixed the problem in 0.42.4, so I included that code:
