hi all...
i'll probably release a new version of devel during the next few days after porting miller's changes from 0.39-test2 to devel ... this time, i'd like to include binaries for windoze and osx ... for win32, i'm able to compile them myself, but for osx, i need some help ... i'd be glad if someone could help me with that.
thanks ... tim
As long as the devel version uses the same commands for building as the MAIN version, then it should be very easy. First, make sure your files are laid out like this: http://puredata.org/docs/developer/devlayout
- Then make the "pd" link to the devel sources.
- Then apply my Mac OS X build patch I just announced (it makes things much easier).
- Download this http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/tcltkaqua/TclTkAquaStandalone -8.4.9.dmg?download to "packages/darwin_app"
- cd packages/darwin_app && make darwin_app_core
Or, if you want to include everything from CVS:
- cd packages/darwin_app && make darwin_app

hi hans ...
thanks for the hints .... just two questions ...
- is this the procedure to cross-compile from linux (i don't have access to a mac)?
- since devel uses preprocessor defines to enable/disable features ... is it easily possible to ./configure (or whatever equivalent might exist on osx) the build?
thanks ... tim

I have no idea about cross-compiling, I have never tried it. I don't think its possible at all since there are a number of Darwin/Mac OS X specific things like Frameworks, "install_name_tool", Apple extensions to gcc, etc.

In packages/darwin_app/Makefile, in the target "darwin_app_core:", change this line to suit:
cd ../../pd/src/ && ./configure --enable-jack && make

I tried compiled a fresh CVS checkout of devel_0_38 with my MacOSX setup. No luck. Here's the transcript:
well ... the configure script has been written for linux only ... since i wrote it about half a year ago no one tried to port it to osx / cygwin / mingw ...
which basically means ... osx != linux ...
i was thinking to abandon the autobuild stuff in favor of a scons build system (hoping to have a better cross-platform build system) but since i don't have access to a mac, i couldn't even test it on osx... what would you think of a scons build? since you are basically the "pd osx package manager", would you be interested in maintaining the osx part of such a system?

automake is having trouble it seems. That is going to be the same on all platforms. And some files seem to be missing. The problems don't looks like cross-platform issues to me.
You can get access to a shell on a Mac via the SourceForge Compile Farm.

The autoconf stuff is not perfect but it works and I know it well enough. I have little time or interest in learning a new build system when what's there already works.

You'll need to make a much better argument for scons. It would be hard to find something more cross-platforms than autotools. So far, none of these build problems with pd-devel have to do with Mac OS X. They have been autotools problems.

There is no need to support multiple autotools versions, just specify in the README which ones are required. I believe that you can (should?) also specific the required version in the configure.in and Makefile.am.
I have three different versions installed, Fink makes that easy. Its also easy on Debian to install multiple versions.

With Mac OS X, you use gcc to do the linking. It then calls ld and libtool as needed. libtool is definitely used. libtool is used to build pdtcl for example (now renamed to libPdTcl.dylib following the Apple standard). I don't know whether there are Apple-specific modifications to libtool.
