I added xdg-utils as a recommended package, since it includes xdg-open, which should open irc:// URLs. I am going to leave the browsers in as a fallback, since it is better opening only http:// than nothing at all.
Firefox is not a fallback for XChat.
I'm going to leave it at that and close this report, if anyone wants to take this up, they can reopen this bug.
Well, it's a different bug now anyways: pd-extended tries to open unsupported url-schemes in webbrowsers. (xdg-open here throws irc-schemes to iceweasel btw.) I think the only valid solution is to handle web urls like http:// and application URLs like irc:// differently in Pd. (I don't file a report as I use pd-vanilla.)
