If you are not in a rush, I could email the sourceforge helpdesk (as an admin) and have them move it. The advantage with this approach is that all of the revision info would be preserved. It takes them a week or two usually.

Seems that the structure that is best accepted by the developers is to have a subdirectory for each developer. If you want your externals to be compiled by the general build system in the "build" subdirectory you just have to make a "link" in build/src (look at one of the examples in build/src how this is done, in general it is just a "include" statement).
