in fact, the opening of the file is not executed in the thread, so, if this operation takes time and that your audio buffer is not big enough, you might still have dropouts.
try to increase your audio buffer ( i use the -frags option ).

the dropouts should be at least reduced, on my linux system, they have nearly disappeared with small sound files.

i installed the two files (d_soundfile.c + s_inter.c) in my 0.35-test24 sources and compiled it, now it says some stuff on the console about child priorities but in the end i still get dropouts for fileloading?
