Huh? I Don't get this. What I mean by porting is taking the basic framework and subjects from the max tutorial and create pd specifics for it. What point would it be for me to install max?
because, tutorials are designed for a user who is willing to experiment with tutorial patches, not just for reading the pdfs.
Learning Max is mostly developing skills, not knowledge. Various skills: some are quite generic, some apply to Pd as well, others to Pd+cyclone, some are specific to Max, still others are waste of time (e.g. ``screen esthetics'' or timeline).

there is no one-size-fits-all solution. We use max/msp tuts for an optional assignment here, and it is quite often a failure.
That's interesting, 40+ students have a non-optional course here, ofcourse not everybody benefits to the same extent of the tutorials, just like with any school material. So why does it fail in your case? If we can find out
sure, they are great resource, mostly for learning about Max peculiarities, but with nice introductory parts, esp. in msp tuts.
However, there are musicians, new to technology, which are lost if left on their own with Max tutorials, and there are advance hackers, which find them naive and bad style.
