The new icon is growing on me, mainly in that it clearly scales better.
I think what is bothering me about it is mainly that the proportions see a bit off when compared to both other macOS icons and the existing vanilla and extended icons.
My 2 cents:
* the new one is too wide and thin, doesn't quite fit into the overall square profile of the macOS icons * I don't think it needs the tilde * the bang button is too small * the line weight on the edges is too thin and gets lost on small zoom lenses as compared to the other icons * the horz center gradient is still a little much, maybe the more blurred gradient on the extended icon works better? * I'm assuming the font use is Deja Sans Mono?
I think it just needs some tweaks to find a more middle ground with the vanilla and extended icon.

Whichever you go with, here's a script for converting PNG files into retina *.icns: https://gist.github.com/rnkn/d29fcfbf1c46f9c1465468b8965175b6 https://gist.github.com/rnkn/d29fcfbf1c46f9c1465468b8965175b6
Input needs to be PNG 1024 x 1024.

Anyway, if there's better stuff about I'm happy to grab it.
I have a copy of Pd extended (I think pretty much the latest one) squirreled away - I just stuck a copy of their icons here:

I can't judge what makes a good mac icon (anything on a mac screen is ugly to me :)
An emoticon closing a parenthetical?!?
