I would also like to have only one respective incarnation of these files, but when trying around i found that autoconf _needs_ at least NEWS, README and AUTHORS (while INSTALL and COPYING can be autogenerated by autoconf). It's hard to believe that this can't circumvented, but how?
well ... autobuild terribly sucks ... i haven't found a way to get rid of these files ...
hmm, after a bit of research, i find that not automake needs these files, but rather the "gnu-strictness".
why not using "automake --foreign" instead of "automake --gnu --add-missing" (which is the root of all evil) in bootstrap.sh ?
i admit that i do not know, what the gnu-strictness is (except that it enforces certain files, like INSTALL, to be present) and what the benefits over other strictnesses (like "foreign") are, except that it is using the buzzword "gnu".
