I'd say that the best thing to do is put a folder in externals for each library, so like:
externals/mylibrary externals/mylibrary/myobject.c externals/mylibrary/myobject-help.pd externals/mylibrary/Makefile
Some people like a folder for all their libraries, that's ok too:
externals/me/mylibrary externals/me/mylibrary/myobject.c externals/me/mylibrary/myobject-help.pd externals/me/mylibrary/Makefile externals/me/myotherlibrary externals/me/myotherlibrary/myobject.c externals/me/myotherlibrary/myobject-help.pd externals/me/myotherlibrary/Makefile
To start with, I think its good to discuss changes before committing, but once things get going, then its usually fine to commit directly. The night builds will tell us if something is broken :).

thanks hc,
i'll be on my best behaviour!
oh, and as far as the current layout goes, is it best to create my own subdirectory in the externals root as keeping with tradition, or is there a new transcendent method which i should be aware.
as for this externals build tree problematic, i will be sure to put my findings on the developers wiki before comiting to svn, where is the current conversation with you and IO happening?

Seems like we waiting long enough, if anyone has any objections please speak up. I added you, so you should have commit access.

hi folks,
i'm requesting developer commit access to pd svn. for those of you not aware i've been a long term pd user, a regular #dataflow atendee, and an occasional contributor of code and other debris to this and other forums.
i'm requesting access to svn to help fix up the externals build system, add some of my own more useful externals and contribute to the documentation drive.
i'm currently maintaining packages for archlinux and 64studio - aka ubuntuLTS(hardy) for 64bit and although my particpation with pd is often fleeting i'm hoping to become a bit more active with my developments.
any objections?
