I am not sure if pd needs to play all these compressed formats. I never had problems converting the files in a proper, easy to read format like wav or aiff, saving tons of CPU time for more useful tasks.
I do agree that the pd builtin player is awkward to use and misses features like speed change, which makes it pretty useless for all but trivial playback.
maybe it's just another stupid idea, that will be discussed once and never realized (like the marketplace / bounty system),
We just couldn't agree on the bounty system. I was against it and in favour of forming a non-profit organization. I wouldn't step back from my opinion without seeing a proposal for a proper model of the bounty system. Obviously copying the Gnome bounty thing can't possibly work, and we do not even have the information about how they do it internally.
Who takes the decisions ? How can we assure that this will be fair ? Who decides what gets implemented, how ?
So this is the problem. Someone would have to really think about it, which means a lot of work, just as the formation of an organization, or just like the setup of the CVS. I wouldn't volunteer for such a task anymore, you are free to do so. Just get a critical amount of developers on your side and make sure the others don't run away completely.

but what about a plugin api for pd? the readsf/writesf players could be improved (maybe similarly written to thomas's sfplay) and an api could be designed that makes it possible to support all kinds of audio formats ... mp3, ogg, flac, speex, libsndfile, whatever you want ... this api could also be used for the soundfiler ...
just a stupid idea to save some work ... but it will only work if several developers _cooperate_ which will be the mayor problem :-(
