oh ... and btw, what's the state of libtool for osx? the last thing i heard was, that it's not gnu compatible ... since pd externals are shared objects, the optimal way to build them would be libtool, if we stick to autobuild ...
With Mac OS X, you use gcc to do the linking. It then calls ld and libtool as needed. libtool is definitely used. libtool is used to build pdtcl for example (now renamed to libPdTcl.dylib following the Apple standard). I don't know whether there are Apple-specific modifications to libtool.
