moin Hans, moin list,
I've got the gfsm externals building here in a pd-extended-friendly sort
of way using a static local copy of the libgfsm sources by default.
According to the PdLab logs, the build is still failing
(http://autobuild.puredata.info/auto-build/2008-12-01/logs/2008-12-01_01.51.…):
> /bin/sh ../../libtool --tag=CC --mode=compile gcc ... -c -o gfsmCommon.lo gfsmCommon.c
> gcc ... -c gfsmCommon.c -o gfsmCommon.o
> In file included from gfsmCommon.c:23:
> ./gfsmCommon.h:32:18: error: glib.h: No such file or directory
Apparently, libglib-2.0 isn't installed on this machine (and probably
not on the other PdLab machines either). Would it be possible to
install it? The relevant debian packages are:
libglib2.0-0
libglib2.0-data
libglib2.0-dev
Also required for the full configuration & build process are:
libtool (debian package libtool-1.4)
pkg-config (debian package pkg-config)
Again, these missing packages cause no fatal errors to the pd-extended
build process as a whole, they just mean that the gfsm externals don't
get built (which they never really did before, so probably no one is
missing them).
peace, love, & marmosets,
Bryan

Quote: "Please send your request to the pd-dev mailing list, together
with an introduction about your person and what you are doing."
So here it is:
Hello everyone,
My real name is Ilias, but I'm better known as Jesus. I build things,
mostly hardware, mostly sound-related, and mostly using analogue
electronic circuits. I've built a home-made Analogue Modular
Audio/Visual Synthesizer called Bob, which took me two years to
complete, while on the road, driving from Greece (where I was born) to
the UK (where I live) and back several times. During that period I also
performed a lot around Europe and the Balkans with my band (I Knew Them)
and with my electronic devices (Jesus is Angry). My most recent project
was building a Theremin with a proximity sensor for the pitch and a
luminance sensor for the volume.
As far as computers are concerned, I am a GNU/Linux user and supporter.
My software-views tend to be closer to the Free Software idea, as in
Free Speech. I maintain the OtherSide (http://otherside.servebeer.com)
which hosts some of my projects. I generally work on software that I
really like using, since my inspiration comes from my need to do things
that are not already there, or do the things that are there better, if
possible.
I have been using PD for a while now, mostly as a tool to explore ideas
that I then might implement to hardware. I am inspired by the networking
side of things when it comes to PD. I have created the OtherSide PD
system, a web-based collaborative synthesis system, based on PD but also
using IRC, a Python IRC bot, and the festival speech synthesis system,
during an MA course in Sonic Art and Media Production, in the University
of Sheffield Sound Studios. I am now doing a PhD in Hybrid Modular
Synthesis Systems in the same institution where I also teach. I am
interested in using computers and analogue electronics to create hybrid
systems for audio and video synthesis. I am currently working with PD
and have access to a couple of Arduinos to play with. I have created an
Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 Package for PD-extended, which has been added to
the list on the website. I am also working on a -functional- 64-bit
version of PD-extended, since I have access to a 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04
Hardy system. Unfortunately, since this is in campus and is behind a
firewall, it is not easy for me to offer it as a PdLab machine. I'd be
happy to do a 64-bit branch when I make it work and offer deb (and maybe
rpm) packages. I am trying to convince the Computer Services in the USSS
to host an APT repository so I can have these things available there.
I'd be equally happy if they were hosted at the existing PD APT. I also
have an idea about a PD-server branch, to be used on headless server
systems with no GUI, for networking.
So to sum up, if you haven't been bored to death reading so far, I'd
like to get involved with the PD project as a dev. I've created a
Sourceforge account with the username jesushero and name Jesus H.
Thanks!!
PS: Sorry Gunter, didn't realize until now that the horrible DNS at the
University sends emails as user(a)sheffield.ac.uk instead of
user(a)shef.ac.uk - Re-registered...
moving this to pd-dev as hans has suggested.

i don't know exactly (since i don't use the build-system), but
"pd-extended-auto-builder.sh" should your script.
(the other scripts are included/called as needed by this script)
i suggest looking at the script beforehand via your favorite editor.
hans is of course the one to know the details.

hmm, i just grabbed the archlive-20081118 iso-image and was able to
compile an uptodate version of Gem just fine (that is: without any
font-rendering, imagemagick nor movie(avi/mov/mpeg) decoding - i did not
install any extra packages just using the ones that came with the ISO-image)

string2any doesn't load on Windows, perhaps its missing. I don't have a Windows machine to test on, but I have seen this on other people's machines.

Message:
... oops, my fault: I removed any2string, string2any, and sprinkler from
flatspace a few months ago, since the duplicates seemed to be causing some
confusion. See the pd-list archives for August 2008:
http://lists.puredata.info/pipermail/pd-list/2008-08/064506.htmlhttp://lists.puredata.info/pipermail/pd-list/2008-08/064512.html
I still maintain that the windoof autobuild machine has a broken version
of make, and that v3.79 is not broken in that sense.
I also have no windows machine on which to test, so it's a bit difficult
for me to support that platform. I see 3 possible solutions at the
moment:
1) someone fixes the make on the autobuild machine (opinions, Hans?)
- variant "1b": I call an alternate un-broken make from the "moocow"
snippet of externals/Makefile instead of using $(MAKE).
2) I stop using macros in externals/moocow/extended/Makefile; possibly
even generating windows-specific makefiles for each subdirectory of
moocow/
- ugly, time-consuming, and harder to maintain
3) I (or someone else) place any2string and string2any (and maybe
sprinkler) back into flatspace
- redundant, confusing, help files don't get installed, mismatched
versions, ...
Of these, (1) and (3) would be easiest for me. I don't care much for
(2)... I could deal without the macros on this scale, but they sure are
handy...

The OtherSide server (http://otherside.servebeer.com) which is currently
hosting an APT repository with PD-extended for Ubuntu Intrepid will be
down for a couple of hours during the weekend for maintenance. Checking
the logs, I noticed a lot of IP's actually asking for the APT, so I
thought I should let you know just in case you experience any downtime.

while this is not technically a bug, I do think it is something that we can
do better. For that reason, I encourage you to create a patch illustrating
this for the "message oddness" collection. For example, this problem was
documented there, albeit poorly, so it would be great to have a better
illustration:

i think there are 2 things in your report:
- you are mixing floats and symbols in your arguments, which according to
the docs is an invalid use of the object: "Route checks the first element
of a message against each of its arguments, which may be numbers or symbols
(but not a mixture of the two.)"; one could argue that [route] should print
a warning if this happens
- the 2nd bug you reported is (i believe) related to the the issue fixed
in patch #2151892

but really it also boils down to an invalid use of the [route] object

send '0': first outlet matches: OK
send 'bla': no match: WRONG
to trigger the bug, '0' can be replaced by any other float, but not by 'float'.
case 2)
[route 1 bla]
send '0': second outlet matches: WRONG
send '1': first outlet matches: OK
send '2': no match: OK
send 'bla': no match: WRONG
the same behaviour is show also with any other non-zero float number as first argument.

i see.
sorry for the bogus bug report. but yeah, a warning would help. being able
to have an invalid combination of arguments without being notified is
confusing.

i think there are 2 things in your report:
- you are mixing floats and symbols in your arguments, which according to
the docs is an invalid use of the object: "Route checks the first element
of a message against each of its arguments, which may be numbers or symbols
(but not a mixture of the two.)"; one could argue that [route] should print
a warning if this happens
- the 2nd bug you reported is (i believe) related to the the issue fixed
in patch #2151892
https://sourceforge.net/tracker2/?func=detail&aid=2151892&group_id=55736&at…;
but really it also boils down to an invalid use of the [route] object
