Hi list,
I have a problem with flext and the modules compiled with it.
I'm using Apple Snow Leopard (10.6.2) on my macbook (white mid 2007 intel core 2 duo 2,16GHz).
I could compile flext itself configuring it for ARCH=i386 only and the compiler and linker flags for a min version 10.5 and also I used the solution they gave here: http://www.mail-archive.com/pd-list@iem.at/msg29829.html to solve a problem with bits/atomicity.h while building it.
Once compiled and installed flext I built and installed some modules from the tutorial to try them but when I add them to a patch Pd (vanilla & extended) crash.
I try also to compile flext and the module adding the flags for the compiler and the linker like explained here: http://www.mail-archive.com/pd-dev@iem.at/msg06512.html
And again the same result.
The problem is that I don't know a way to debug it because PD just closes.
Any help will be absolutely useful!
Thanks
//////////////
Miguel.

if abs1 is an abstraction (maybe empty)
if abs2 is a GOP abstraction that use abs1
opening an other instance of abs1 and saving it will crash pd.

confirmed (linux; Pd-vanilla-0.42.5)
it does _not_ crash on 0.41-4 on the same machine.
a quick backtrace shows that the crash appears in canvas_doclear() because
the gl_editor of the argument x is NULL.

Initial Comment:
1. Open patch.pd
2. Delete the subpatch.
3. Either a) create a new my_abs object or b) undo the previous delete
4. Repeat steps 2-3 n times.
Now when you open the subpatch, all actions occur n+1 times, e.g.:
* creating a new object box makes a chain of n+1 object boxes
* patch is saved n+1 times
* paste creates n+1 new copies
If you don't save and try to close patch.pd, it repeats the message "discard changes to patch.pd" and sometimes crashes after two or three times.
The behavior persists until closing pd completely. So if you go through the steps above 3 times, close the patch, and reopen it and go through them 3 more times, you'll get 7 extra objects every time you create something from the "put" menu.
I only get this behavior when using gop, and with an object visible in the gop window. Same for abstractions. For each extra object created in the subpatch, I get a "consistency check failed: canvas_vis" error to the console.

I guess title says it all. I've noticed that sometimes Pd segfaults, even locks the machine and I am trying to trace down the problem. Patches in question are relatively complex and use various externals and they don't crash every time. I am using Linux and would like to find out how to debug this thing (e.g. using gdb or other tools). If possible, I would appreciate verbose answers as I've never delved into runtime debugging tools (beyond setting up verbose checkpoints using stderr messages, which in this case appear not to be very helpful).
Please advise.

Seems it's fixed in 8.5 now (see below)
I noticed Hans had changed submenu delays to infinite - if it was to avoid
compiz glitches it can be changed back now.

Summary: Compiz animates each menu item as a new window
Initial Comment:
Compiz somehow thinks that the menus of these apps are separate windows and
applies window open and close animation to them. Thus each submenu "pulses"
like ordinary window when opened and navigating a menu (specially one with
zero delay) looks like a firework.

Applied this patch to HEAD and to 8.5 branch.
A separate patch (possibly done as a TIP) will be done to make it possible
to handle the combobox dropdowns, tooltips and other window types from
script level.

You are right (I was reading an old version of the document).
I tried setting _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_MENU for torn-off menus and
_NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_DROPDOWN_MENU for normal menus. The result is the
same for normal (override-redirect) menus, but for torn-off menus the
result is a window which doesn't have an icon in the applications bar
but is not transient of the [winfo toplevel $menu] . This can resut in the
menu going bottom of the window stack without the user noticing.
I think we can do two things in this scenario:
* For torn-off menus, we set _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_NORMAL and it behaves
like a normal (animated) window. This is the default now.
* For torn-off menus, we set _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_MENU and
WM_TRANSIENT_FOR to make the menu transient of its toplevel, so it
doesn't get lost behind other windows.
I don't think Tk can distinguish between a "normal" menu and a "popup"
menu, so _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_POPUP_MENU is out of discussion.

Actually, it wants to be one of:
1. _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_MENU - for torn off menus
2. _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_DROPDOWN_MENU - for "real" menus from the menubar
3. _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_POPUP_MENU - for menus that are neither of the
other two (i.e. posted with tk_popup)

Comment By: Emiliano (egavilan)

Message:
Apparently new window managers expects additional information to be set
about what the function of the window is.
More precisely, it expects the _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE property to be set to
_NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_MENU for menu windows. See
http://standards.freedesktop.org/wm-spec/1.3/ar01s05.html .
A patch against HEAD (5 dec 2009) adds this information to menu windows on
x11.
As a result, the new property is set for menu windows as shown by xprop
output:
_NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE(ATOM) = _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_MENU
For the patch, see http://paste.tclers.tk/1880

The menu code is very scattered over different files, but the key part
appears to be in tkUnixWm.c in the function to create the actual X window
for the menu (TkpMakeMenuWindow). If I'm reading that function right, the
override_redirect flag is not being set on the menu until after the window
is created, and maybe compiz is not noticing that. Can't tell, as I'm not a
