Apologies for cross-posting...
Dear Colleagues and fellow computer music enthusiasts,
On May 30th 1pm-7pm EST @ NYC Resistor L2Ork will hold a one-day workshop on building Linux-based laptop orchestra and unique opportunities such an ensemble brings about.
Synopsis:
L2Ork is an ultra-affordable tool for handling administrative logistics associated with starting a new Linux-based laptop orchestra using exclusively free software and cost-efficient hardware. The workshop will cover general issues in regards to starting a Linux-based laptop orchestra, as well as provide an opportunity for the workshop participants to engage in writing for L2Ork. The workshop will also cover L2Ork's latest initiative to bridge STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and Arts in K-12 education and funding opportunities such a project may bring about.
Participants will learn about:
* administrative and logistical prerequisites for starting a Linux-based laptop orchestra
* design considerations in designing and building adequate infrastructure (speakers, soundcard, system configuration and optimization)
* streamlining Linux platform
* optimizing Pure-Data software for GUI-based networked performances
* ensuing creative opportunities of a networked laptop orchestra
* design strategies and standards developed for writing pieces for the L2Ork ensemble
* education-based opportunities attained through L2Ork's ultra-affordable infrastructure
* logistical considerations in building GUIs for a diverse group of performers with widely varying amount of musical training and experience
* wiimote strategies for an ensemble-oriented performance
* strategies for incorporating soloists into the L2Ork ensemble
Participants will be given access to:
* all L2Ork's resources, including custom code and Pure-Data abstractions designed specifically for the orchestra and its input devices
* customized Pure-Data software platform with performance, editor, and GUI enhancements
* access to software repository containing optimized Linux kernel and supporting software as well as turnkey Linux setup containing an entire hard-drive image of the L2Ork Linux system
* detailed list of parts necessary to build L2Ork-compatible ~$250 hemispherical speakers and a ~$750/seat turnkey setup including a laptop, external soundcard, wiimote & nunchuk, headset, cables and accessories, and a custom hemispherical speaker.
All participants will be also given an opportunity to interact with L2Ork members (performers and researchers alike) as well as submit their own works for programming consideration by the L2Ork ensemble.

Summary: context menu offset
Initial Comment:
Hello
when you move objects outside the visible window, on the upper side or the left side (for example when you move a group of things to make room fo new objects), the display is re-adapted so that the object being too far up or left are displayed again. This is fine but in this situation, the context menu (with 'properties', 'open', 'help') gets an offset, so when you click on an object to open it or get help, the context menu is displayed far off the object, up or left, depending how you moved the objects before.
It is possible to repair this offset by moving the whole patch down or right. But would it be possible to simply avoid this offset in any case?
Thanks to all for this great software.

Summary: pddplink and pddp/dsp don't play well together
Initial Comment:
If you use pddplink and pddp/dsp in the same patch, pddplink gives the following error:
pddplink: internal error (open [path to the file shown in the link] )
This is caused by [r pd] in pddp/dsp. (Matju wrote something on the list about why this happens, but I can't seem to find it at the moment)

Summary: silence when there's only output device
Initial Comment:
Currently, when there is no input device (but there is output, like on
the Minimac), in the audio config dialog the input is enabled but the
input device list is empty.
In this situation there is no audio output either. Disabling the input
helps - this should be the default when there is no input device.

Hi Hans,
I've found some docs regarding platform independent filename handling in
Tcl using "file join" and "file split" here:
http://www.tcl.tk/man/tcl8.4/TclCmd/file.htm
However I don't know how to add this to the code in image.c. Any ideas?
Ciao

Since the line in question is a line of Tcl, I am sure Tcl has standard
methods of handling file names that will deal with all this...

Allow me to reopen this as a Bug, as 1) I didn't yet get any confirmation
if the space problem is indeed fixed, but 2) more importantly a proper
solution should not fail on other circumstances like the mentioned
doublequotes.

Summary: Updated pddp/print objects
Initial Comment:
Here are some updated versions of pddp/print and pddp/print_long that display selectors correctly (or at least as correctly as vanilla [print] does). I also added a -d flag to both objects so you can explicitly show all selectors (-d for debug, but it could be changed to something else if there's a better arg). Help files are also included.

http://pure-data.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/pure-data?view=rev&revision=134…
The thing about the "list" selector is basically impossible to handle in
Pd. It should keep the 'list', 'symbol', etc. selector just as how it
received it. I think that would only be possible with a C external.
About the -d thing, I don't like adding that kind of syntax to objects.
IMHO that functionality should be in a separate object.

Summary: popup not working in windows (with workaround)
Initial Comment:
Ben Bogart's popup is not working properly in windows (PD-Extended 0.41).
It loads fine but it does not output a selection nor does using its inlet work to change its selection. Whenever you try to do so it gives the error:
error: popup0xa4fda0: no such object
I tracked the problem down and it seems that in windows TK doesn't like it when the pointer reference in hex starts with 0x. This might actually be a problem with the TK provided in the windows version and not with popup itself. In Linux and OS X the reference has 0x in it and works just fine.
Here's a workaround that fixes the problem.
diff popup.c popup.c.orig
596,599d595
< #ifdef NT
< char buf2[256];
< char *buf2ptr;
< #endif
646,654d641
< #ifdef NT
< sprintf(buf2,"%p",x);
< buf2ptr = &buf2;
< if(strstr(buf2, "0x") == buf2ptr) {
< buf2ptr++;
< buf2ptr++;
< }
< sprintf(buf,"popup%s",buf2ptr);

---
>
Changes only in the popup_new function. It uses the NT preprocessing directive, in Linux and OS X it should remain unchanged. Basically it tests the pointer for 0x and removes it.
