Dugal McKinnon is a composer and sound artist whose output encompasses electronic, acoustic and text media, and is often focused on the intersection of these. Recent projects include: Fossil Poetry, for solo cello, written for Katharina Gross who premiered the piece at IEM as part of her cellomondo project; the sound installation Cadence, for recombinant musical cadences, metronome, and tuning fork; and the Now Future project which instigated interdisciplinary arts-centred dialogues on climate change. Dugal is also a writer on sonic art and contemporary music, with chapters on electroacoustic music in New Zealand published in various books. His essay, “Dead Silence: ecological silencing and environmentally engaged sound-art”, appeared in Leonardo Music Journal (Vol. 23). He holds a PhD in Composition from the University of Birmingham and teaches composition, sonic art and sound studies at Te Koki New Zealand School of Music, where he is Programme Leader for Composition and Director of the Lilburn Electroacoustic Music Studios.
