Wir laden Sie herzlichst zu einem Open CUBE Konzert und einer CUBE Lecture am IEM - Institut für Elektronische Musik und Akustik, Inffeldgasse 10/3, 8010 Graz ein!
Dienstag 02.12.2014, 17:00 Uhr CUBE Lecture, 18:00 Uhr Open CUBE Konzert
Open CUBE concert:
Construction in Kneading is a live generative audiovisual work. It is a speculative inquiry into a virtual life form based on the Mandelbox, an n-dimensional fractal inspired by the Mandelbrot set. Its recursion formula resembles the actions of kneading dough in bread making.
All material is derived from the Mandelbox through a live “audiovisualisation”, generating both sound and moving image in real-time without either following the other as in most VJ practice and sound visualisations. No pre-recorded audio samples, conventional synthesis methods, pre-rendered movies nor textures are used. Data from the system is used as audio at different scales of time e.g. at sample rate (a technique known as audification or non-standard synthesis) creating timbre and pitch, and at control rate creating rhythms and phrases.
An increasing number of dimensions of the system are revealed as the work progresses through its three parts, beginning with a line (1D), followed by a slice (2D), and ending with a space (3D). A performance consists of an improvised attempt to understand and control the emergent system
CUBE Lecture:
Live Audiovisualisation using Emergent Generative Systems
“Audiovisualisation” is a technique I have used extensively in my recent practice. It refers to the simultaneous sonification and visualisation of the same source of data. Far from being a redundant doubling of data, research into auditory displays and perception indicate that synchronised audio and visuals are perceived as a combined audiovisual entity, becoming more than the sum of its parts due to cross-modal phenomena. It also forms the basis of Michel Chion’s theory of synchresis and added-value in the context of sound in cinema. Similar concerns to audiovisualisation in the analogue medium may be traced to experimental film, and in particular, Structural/Materialist film from 1970s Britain. The approach allows for more complex processes to be perceived than merely audio or visuals alone, making experimental art more accessible without diluting the content.
About Ryo Ikeshiro:
Ryo Ikeshiro is a UK-based Japanese artist. His works range from live audiovisual performances and interactive installations to generative music pieces and scored compositions. He has presented his works internationally at music and art festivals, as well as at academic conferences. He is featured in the Electronic Music volume of the Cambridge Introductions to Music series. He has also published articles in journals such as Organised Sound. He was originally classically trained and studied composition with Silvina Milstein at Kings College London and Robin Holloway at Cambridge. He then branched out into electronic music and other genres. The meeting of these two worlds informs his practice which explores computational aesthetics that extend beyond the usual imitation of human behaviour and art and music. He completed a PhD at Goldsmiths University of London with supervisors from the Music Department and the Computing Department. He works as a visiting tutor and he also curates events, exhibitions and discussions.
