Hey,
I just set up a repository for the Pd-extended debian/ubuntu packages on the main autobuild machine. I was think that it would be useful to have a different DNS name for the apt source, like "apt.puredata.info" so that if the repository moves to a different machine, the "apt.puredata.info" name can just be redirected.
Here's what I am setting up:
deb http://autobuild.puredata.info/releases sarge main deb http://autobuild.puredata.info/releases etch main deb http://autobuild.puredata.info/releases lenny main deb http://autobuild.puredata.info/releases sid main deb http://autobuild.puredata.info/releases oldstable main deb http://autobuild.puredata.info/releases stable main deb http://autobuild.puredata.info/releases testing main deb http://autobuild.puredata.info/releases unstable main
# ubuntu deb http://autobuild.puredata.info/releases dapper main deb http://autobuild.puredata.info/releases edgy main deb http://autobuild.puredata.info/releases feisty main deb http://autobuild.puredata.info/releases gutsy main deb http://autobuild.puredata.info/releases hardy main

cool.
i have setup apt.puredata.info pointing to 128.238.56.50; since the ttl of the dns records is rather long (1 week) i would suggest waiting a bit before promoting it...

The main ttl only affects positive lookup cache time, so when you create a new name, then it usually becomes active immediately. The positive cache time will only affect changes afterwards. If you had previously set the negative cache time for apt.puredata.info to a week a long time beforehand, then nameservers would cache the negative result, as in no IP for that name. But that's a separate setting.
I probably won't get to it for a bit anyway, so I guess I am just being pedantic. :)

If nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an idea, which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps it to himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into the possession of everyone, and the receiver cannot dispossess himself of it. - Thomas Jefferson

well, true if it wasn't for a positive TTL for "*.puredata.info" (which is how it is currently setup)
so "apt.puredata.info" has been available for ages (pointing to puredata.info), thus the positive (and long) TTL comes into the game.
but anyhow, this is no show stopper.

pretty cool! An hour ago I entered the line you suggested (apt.puredata.info) into sources.list and pd-extended was on this machine in a blink!
Thanks so much!
