I was thinking that an easy way to have art works featured on
puredata.org would be to turn the front page into a blog where anyone
can post. Then have people post images, etc of their works.
That shouldn't be too hard to implement in Plone, right?

this is a mere echo mail: i want to check how alive this list is.
a thread in the pd-list maillist is talking about the pr & marketing
of pure data to the public.
the very hot topics so far are a the puredata website and the pros &
contras of maillist and forum.
a redesign of the webpage would do a very good job in making pd
interesting for other people.
right now it's to technical and a maze, at least in my humble opinion.
and i still want to state that a good fanbase is the best way to
develop a product. more users = more interest = more programers =
better stuff for everyone.
just have a look at processing.org. the program itself is not that
overwhelming. is it an easier access to java programing with a
graphical aproach. but what they did out of it is amazing. a huge
fanbase with so many good libaries to take on.
are there people willing to do a plone-skin? (look at plone.net to see
what is possible) because changing from plone to something else is not
an option i think. to much work. to much lose.

Since we are on the topic, I thought I'd go further into it while I
am reminded of some things. Basically, it seems that puredata.org
site has everything turned on. That was good for experimenting, but
now I think we need to narrow down the website.
For example, I don't think its good to have so many syntax
possibilities. That means if someone wants to maintain the site,
they have to know them all. That's a pain. I think that
StructuredText is bad enough, but then I run into reStructuredText
sites. Plus there are HTML sites too, and there are other options
available. I think we should just decide on two: HTML, since its
widely understood, and one wiki syntax. Personally I am a big
advocate of MediaWiki syntax. Its broadly understood and quite easy
and flexible to use. MoinMoin syntax looks somewhat close to
MediaWiki, and its written in Python.
Another thing, I think no one uses "article" and "topic", so they
should be removed. Basically, the page types list should be stripped
down to a well defined set, as simple as possible, but no simpler.
These specifics might not be the biggest problem, but I think that's
the general idea of what needs to happen to make the site work better.

FYI: I am not IOhannes, who goes by Hannes in meatspace. I am just
Hans, or Hans-Christoph Steiner in the digital world. IOhannes lives
in Graz, and I in Brooklyn, New York.
I cc'ed the pdweb list because I don't know the answer to your
question. IOhannes probably does, and he reads that list.

If nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of
exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an
idea, which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps
it to himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into
the possession of everyone, and the receiver cannot dispossess
himself of it. - Thomas Jefferson

I just noticed that the developer docs on puredata.org were moved to
the "developer" section. Please put them back where they were, that
is where they belong. The "developer" section is not for
documentation, the documentation section is. That has been long
since established.
Also, there are many, many links out there that point to the old
location for the developer docs.
Lastly, please consult this list before making such drastic changes
to the website. I've put a lot of work into that section, so you
could have at least asked.
