I think we should shift the downloads page to the nice Software page that IOhannes set up. I think we need to simplify it a bit to make it easier to understand. Here's what I propose:
- rename "stand-alone products" to "Applications" - remove "frameworks" and "graphics" and put all libraries into "libraries and externals"
How does that sound?

i have also a suggestion:
how about redirecting "software.puredata.info" to the software page? (open for better names; the idea is to short down the URL)

How about: download.puredata.info get.puredata.info
Also, what about making the main URL of the software page be http://puredata.info/downloads That'll take a bit of migration work, but I am willing to help do that. That's more of a long term plan.

get.puredata.info
well, i would use that only as a catchy short-hand form that redirects to download.puredata.info. but it's a good idea to use it as such.

So what kind of timeline are you thinking? I guess we'd need to put the Pd-extended and pure-data releases into the software page, then we'd be ready to switch.

Also, one minor detail: is it possible to change the front page to have two rows of 2, rather than one row of 3 and the other of 1?

i've updated Pd-vanilla to 0.42.6, and leave Pd-extended to you, if that is ok for you...

changed to 2.

actually its "download.puredata.info" (as i would have expected it; though it makes me think whether it should accept downloads.puredata.info as well)

Ok, the Pd-extended stuff is in, the only thing left really in the "Contributed Builds" section. That works nicely as a wiki, but I can't see a good way to do it in this software manager thingy. Basically it should be a place where anyone can edit/link but it should be marked as not "official".

i have copied the "other_members" 'smartfolder' to http://get.puredata.info/other but have to find an intelligent way to get a link to that from the starting page.
as for contributed builds: they should be part of a softwareproject (e.g. pd-extended), but you want them to be visibly offset (?) i don't see a real reason for that (i guess it is along the lines of "untrollable build environment where people could do (willingly or not) nasty things") personally i would probably go for one of: - - not mark contributed builds at all - - use the comment to indicate the contribution - - use a different symbol for the contrib

which i have done now. at the end of the page at http://download.puredata.info you will see the section for the member downloads and links to the sourceforge-page and auto-builds.
from my side this makes it ready to go, i could change the /downloads link to directly point to this webpage as soon as you all agree...

I'm ok with switching now, as long as we recognize we still need to change somethings.

sounds great. but if do recognize things that need to change we should enumerate them now, else they will be forgotten and/or never fixed.
btw, are you referring to the "contributed builds"? (as i don't know anything else that is still in need to be done) if so, i would welcome your comment on my suggestions.

Here's some things that I think could be improved:
- distinct contributed builds
- better layout on the main screen, like perhaps take away the dates and put a little version of the project's icon.
- a top section for people just getting started to point to Pd- extended as the easiest place to start. Right now the page works very well for people already using Pd, but is probably confusing for someone just starting.
But I have no particular deadlines for these, I just wanted to make sure this page didn't get locked down, thereby preventing such changes in the future.

in case nobody noticed it: the portal tab "download pd" no directs to "http://download.puredata.info", which is the software page.
the old "http://puredata.info/downloads" is still in place and functional

I noticed, that's good, thanks. Now we just need to make some kind of newbie-friendly banner on the new downloads page that links to Pd- extended, and then point http://puredata.info/downloads to the new downloads page.
How does that sound?
