So, what I'm saying is, I WANT to intall Debian, but I'm very afraid to do so and have the same kind of probems. My newer computer (used one year) though, is a Dell Inspiron 630m, which my old employer let me keep when I left, while the old one was some PIII Toshiba. Can I expect an easier time with the install of Debian on a newer laptop? My friend led me to believe the problems were related to having an older laptop.
Currently would be a good time installing Debian, as a new "stable" is just out. It comes with a current kernel, and as with every new kernel, this will support more hardware than older ones and run much smoother.
USB-WLAN often is a problem, as not many hardware has open source drivers. This affects all distributions alike, as they all basically run the same kernel and Ubuntu also doesn't include non-free drivers out of the box. If you stick isn't supported well, I'd try to find a better supported one or may a pc-card for wireless.
Ciao
