FYI: Since PiDiP was started by porting EffecTV to PDP, PiDiP inherits EffecTV's GNU GPL license.

Such is the infectious nature of the GNU GPL. While PiDiP might be able to be offered with another license, the GNU GPL requires that PiDiP is also available under the GNU GPL.

If it doesn't use EffectTV as modules (external code) and includes source code from EffectTV, you're right.

A solution to partialy avoid the GPL would be to release two sets of externals: one with the code from EffectTV and the other with the new code. -- Marc

I checked; the EffectTV part is implemented as source modules ported to PD, and their c files are released as GPL. But the whole shebang, including the EffectTV modules, is compiled into one monolitic binary external (not including help patches and external files like images and map, or course).
So until the licensing issues are not solved, I'll call it PiDNiP, since it's Definitely Not in Pieces... ;-)

To add more confusion (and more fun) here's the text of the included copyright notice in the Debian package (/usr/share/doc/pd-pidip/copyright):
"This package was debianized by Pablo Martin caedes@sindominio.net on Fri, 18 Jul 2003 05:42:47 +0200. It was downloaded from http://ydegoyon.free.fr Upstream Author: Yves Degoyon ydegoyon@free.fr Copyright: This software is published under GPL terms, found on Debian systems in the file /usr/share/common-licenses/GPL-2."
The date suggest that it is an older license. Also mentionned in /usr/share/doc/pd-pidip/README : "This software is published under GPL terms."

a bit bored, but you forget we like to confuse lawyers and boring people first..
for no license satisfies me... if i cannot forbid some people to use it to do a bad job..
that's it.. confusion is next..
